About the Position: This position is located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

Duties

Rear insects using knowledge of their developmental patterns and requirements to maximize colony production and reduce testing time. Develop protocols insuring potential disease vectors and non-native pests are handled carefully and do not escape. Fine-tunes and prepares SOPs as needed. Rear insects to support field trials, teaching, and outreach programs. Learn new protocols and methodology, train personnel, coordinate technicians? efforts, and serve on a diverse field data collection team consisting of technicians, and senior civilian- and military- entomologists. Prepare insecticidal solutions by mixing technical-grade insecticides and designated carriers, weighing to within one milligram of accuracy, and producing solutions in the parts-per-million range. Maintain the Entomological Sciences Division webpage to including inputting of new information, removing outdated materials, and updating existing products. Serve as the subject matter expert for all web-based products submitted through the Product Assurance and Clearance (PAC) process.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work weekends and/or holidays.
  • This position involves use of toxic chemicals. Incumbent will be required to pass an annual physical which will include Pulmonary function test and Cholinesterase levels.
  • This position also requires the incumbent to wear a respirator.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 25 pounds is required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid stateside driver's license.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirements for Biological Sciences Technician (INSECTS) GS-0404-09: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: conducting field studies; monitoring environmental conditions of insect colonies; and managing insect laboratory. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). OR Education: Two (2) full years of graduate education or a master's degree, in biology, animal science, or related degree from an accredited college or university. (Note: You must attach a copy of your relevant transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
