Duties
Responsible for processing tissues including dehydration, cleaning, embedding, microtomy; staining tissue sections with hematoxylin and eosin.
Performs electron microscopic studies on animal tissues, body fluids, or specific lesions to diagnose and characterizing naturally occurring or experimentally induced diseases in various laboratory animals.
Evaluates electron micrographs, characterizes findings, establishes diagnoses, and coordinates and reviews these results with appropriate staff members in an efficient and timely fashion.
Performs numerous special stain procedures with proficiency.
Evaluates histologic sections for the demonstration of etiologic agents which cause infectious diseases, especially gram negative or positive bacteria, mycobacteria, spirochetes, amoeba, toxoplasma, viral inclusions, rickettsiae and fungi.
Performs immunohistochemical studies on paraffin embedded or frozen tissues to demonstrate the presence of intracellular antigens including infectious agents, intermediate filaments, and cell secretory products, as well as cell surface markers.
Evaluates, interprets and documents the results of such studies.
Provides skill in the utilization and maintenance of the electron microscope; recognizes and corrects problems related to the microscope: such as malalignment, astigmatism and image defects.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-401 position you must meet the following Education Requirements:
A. Have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university;
OR
B. Have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position,
AND
Have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.
Additionally, in order to qualify at the GS-11 level, you must:
A. Have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree;
OR
B. Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing technical activities in a histology laboratory to include tissue processing, embedding, microtomy and routine and special stain procedures but not limited to gram, giemsa, acid fast, Congo red, PAS, Gomori methenamine silver, Steiner's silver, oil red O stain, Sudan black stain, Masson's trichrome, Prussian blue and Von Kossa; performing transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on varied animal tissues, including thin sectioning, utilization of a TEM, analysis of EM images and photomicroscopy; evaluates specimens, characterizes findings, establishes diagnoses and selects specific lesions for photography; performing immunohistochemical studies on paraffin embedded tissues for demonstration of specific antigens and infectious agents in tissues, evaluates and documents findings.
OR
C. Have a combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
Additionally, in order to qualify at the GS-12 level, you must:
Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing complex technical activities in a histology laboratory to include tissue processing, embedding, microtomy and routine and special stain procedures but not limited to gram, giemsa, acid fast, Congo red, PAS, Gomori methenamine silver, Steiner's silver, oil red O stain, Sudan black stain, Masson's trichrome, Prussian blue and Von Kossa; independently performing transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on varied animal tissues, including thin sectioning, utilization of a TEM, analysis of EM images and photomicroscopy; independently evaluates specimens, characterizes findings, establishes diagnoses and selects specific lesions for photography; independently performing immunohistochemical studies on paraffin embedded tissues for demonstration of specific antigens and infectious agents in tissues, independently evaluates and documents findings.
