The incumbent is the Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist in the Diagnostic Imaging Department and serves as the assistant to the Diagnostic Imaging Program Administrator (IPA). He/She is fully authorized to represent the IPA in their absence or when delegated. The purpose of the position is to assist the IPA with the planning, coordination, direction of technical and administrative operations of Diagnostic Imaging at the Beckley VAMC.

Duties

The technologist functions as the direct supervisor of Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists (DRT) at the GS-9 level and below which may include support staff. The incumbent provides or obtains a variety of management services including documentation, administrative, management, and program analysis, accreditation, strategic planning, budget/finance, human resources management, supplies, equipment, services, space, safety, and supervision of IPA staff. Develops, maintains, and updates staff schedules, including on-call, weekend coverage, etc. Posts hard copies in the imaging core area with timely updates as needed. Evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. Informs supervisor of anticipated staffing variances and recommends promotions ,reassignments, or other personnel changes. Directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. Strengthens lines of communication with all other department heads, as well as the radiologists and other personnel within the department. Communicates information with other departments and answers any questions they may ask in helping to solve interdepartmental problems. Works with Administrative Officer and/or Secretary to review and update all departmental memorandum, policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures. Keeps abreast of all standards and regulations of internal and external regulatory and accrediting bodies and assists IPA with implementing changes within policies and procedures. Works in conjunction with safety personnel. Works under the direction and guidance of the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to properly assist in documenting excessive radiation dosing, reviewing dosimetry badge readings, analyzing instances of increased radiation exposure levels and recommend reduction measures, and to report contrast reactions and other complications; and will sit as a member in the absence of the IPA in the assigned committees. Assists IPA in conducting staff meetings, reviewing policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, and discusses changes in routines and other related subjects. Assists in keeping employees informed of management goals, objectives, and status of agenda items. Formulates training in radiographic techniques for new employees. Orients all newly hired technical staff and other medical personnel with a need to know to radiology service policies and procedures. Advises IPA and/or maintenance representative of any problems with equipment and follows up to ensure necessary repairs are accomplished. Works with AO or Secretary to request to fill vacancies. Responsible for assuring technologists keep cabinets stocked with necessary supplies and overall neatness and cleanliness of the clinic rooms. Assists in the development of budget estimates/requirements for the fiscal year. Performs a wide variety of examinations and procedure to produce radiographic studies that are used in medical diagnosis to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions, or lesions within the body. Will prepare and administer contrast medical and medications in accordance with State and Federal regulations in incumbent's area of licensure/certification (American Registry of Radiologic Technology) when staffing levels require the incumbent to do so to ensure that patient care is continued without delay or interruption. Serves as timekeeping supervisor for the department. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-10 Experience. At least one year of the following types of experience comparable to the next lower grade level that fully meets the KSAs at that level. Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety ,and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments: Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. [The technologist] functions as a supervisor for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below which may include support staff. The technologist evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. The technologist]informs higher level management of anticipated staffing variances and informally recommends promotions, reassignments, or other personnel changes such as retention or release of probationary employees, and recognition of superior performance in the diagnostic radiologic area. The technologist] directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation. Ability to evaluate quality management procedures and processes. Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity. Skill in developing new policies and guidelines as needed. Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution. Preferred Experience: Needs 5 plus years of experience as a Radiologic Technologist References: See VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G25 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-10 Physical Requirements: The work requires a high level of standing. There will be some walking, sitting, and carrying of light to moderate items. The need to transfer patients is not frequent but will be required.
