The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Operating Room). The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Operating Room) will function in Radiology Service.

Duties

The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Operating Room) is a registered Radiology Technologist with major duties including: -Operates portable and fixed radiographic equipment including but not limited to hybrid rooms, mobile c-arms, mini c-arms, portable radiographic units, and injectors. -Works with attending physicians to optimize fluoroscopic procedures including performing spot and digital subtraction angiography (DSA). -Knowledge of basic physics including concepts of energy, electrical power, and radiation physics as to understand the advanced operations of the fixed fluoroscopic units. -Superuser for hybrid rooms serving as facility expert on the safe operation and troubleshooting of hybrid imaging equipment. -Determines action plan for specific procedure, including room configuration, customary and special supplies, and accessory equipment. Ensures that all equipment and supplies are available for the procedure. -Requires knowledge and skill needed in positioning of patients for the variety of complex studies. -Performs DA, DSA, One-shot imaging as well as advanced imaging including roadmapping, all aspects of DSA stepping such as panoramic view and split screen pixel shift, perform Dynamic Trace and all aspects of DSA and DA rotational imaging. -Skill to recognize changes in technique and procedure that may lead to increase radiation doses. Advises surgeon on alternative techniques to decrease dosage. -Ability to recognize changes in equipment that might result in increased exposure and how to recommend methods to prevent such exposures. -Performs QA according to manufacturer's specifications. Performs daily quality assurance checklist for each Hybrid x-ray unit. Maintains QA records as required by Service SOP. -Educates and directs all visitors to proper Radiation Safety guidelines including nurses, residents, and fellows. Responsible for radiation compliance control during use of the Hybrid OR Suites. -Confers with surgeon regarding nonstandard or atypical examinations and determines technical factors, positioning, and protocol modification according to the surgeon's direction and guidance. -Responsible for training new technologists in advanced imaging procedures and low dose protocols. -Performs basic and advanced image acquisitions as well as post processing. -Supports Specialty Clinics through fluoroscopic imaging. -Provides patient education regarding fluoroscopic x-ray procedures. -Performs safe operation of fluoroscopic equipment including radiation safety of patients and personnel participating in fluoroscopic procedures. -Works with supervisor and other technologists to provide efficient and timely support to surgeons. -Schedules exams in a manner to optimize efficiency. This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the emergency patient who may need immediate surgery. -Properly identifies patient images and adheres to patient identification protocols. -Acquires images and coordinates the sending/receiving of Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) images to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). -Trains new technologists and students in the operating room as instructed by Diagnostic Radiology Supervisor. -Reports any concerns to Diagnostic Radiology Supervisor regarding equipment operation, performance, safety, and quality. -Must have proficient knowledge of contrast media preparation and administration. -Adheres to ACR sterile technique guidelines, hospital infection control and safety policies with emphasis on sterile technique. This includes the use and storage of sterile supplies, disposal of bodily fluids, 'sharps', proper attire, and hand washing practices. -Responsible for stocking and inventory of imaging supplies and related materials. -Maintains a questioning attitude with continual learning while also contributing ideas for improvement in maintaining the highest standard-of-care for Veterans. -Sends images via teleradiology service as required for patient care needs. -Performs general diagnostic imaging exams as needed. -Other duties as assigned by Diagnostic Radiology Supervisor. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Preferred Experience: 3 years of operating room experience. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, the candidate must possess the following experience: GS-9: Must possess one year of experience at the GS-8 level or equivalent as an ARRT Certified Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) providing services in specialized areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic technology services. Employees at this level are fully functional as an Advanced DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRT's at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures. Examples of specialized experience are: Checking systems for operation and assessing acceptable performance based on established guidelines, monitoring calibration parameters and making adjustments as needed, monitoring a patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keeping the radiologist informed, using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers, and recognizing unusual images and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest. Applicants must also demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. The full performance level of this position is GS-9. References: VA Handbook 5005/119 Part II Appendix G25 dated December 13, 2019 Physical Requirements: Must pass pre-employment examination and designate drug testing portion. Work requires long periods of standing and walking and some bending. Must be able to push, pull and lift over 40 pounds.
