The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI). The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI) will function in Radiology Service.
Duties
***This position requires rotation between the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center and the Parma VA Clinic.***
The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI) is a registered Radiology Technologist with major duties including:
Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists (MRI) at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. The incumbent performs a wide variety of complex radiologic examinations of patients to aid in the diagnosis of disease or injury.
Receives patients, explains methods of procedures, positions patient and makes exposures necessary for the requested examination.
Independently makes standard examinations
Confers with Radiologists to establish requirements of nonstandard examinations
Schedules patients for examinations
Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges patient priorities to accommodate them
Independently operates Diagnostic Imaging equipment
Helps to develop new techniques, define optimal protocols, and devise alternative ways to visualize pathology within the patient
Performs examinations on patients according to protocols and parameters set forth by department or procedures by a radiologist
Performs a wide variety of complex radiologic examinations of patients to aid in the diagnosis of disease or injury
Positions patients
Selects and sets technical factors
Sets up and adjusts accessory equipment and makes exposures based on request of physician or other specialists
Performs routine x-ray examinations of all areas of the body to include skull, spines, abdomen, and all extremities with minimal discomfort to the patient
Explains the radiographic procedure to allay fears and obtain maximum cooperation from the patient
Follows mandated HIPPA guidelines
Follows guidelines for properly registering and editing examinations
Properly retrieves and utilizes data from DHCP Network (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IP Network) and properly identifies images
Enters correct data on the imaging request, in the computers and in the CR/CR system
Properly enters patient's accession number in the CR/DR terminal to ensure proper transfer of case to PAC's system
Enters pertinent patient information into CPRS/Order Entry Radiology Notes, such as patient refusals, order cancellations or any complications
Properly sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required and makes exposures necessary for requested procedures
Completes examinations by transmitting images to the PACS immediately after procedure is finished
Checks the maintenance of daily supplies to avoid any slow-down in patient care
Ensures that the highest degree of cleanliness is kept in all examination rooms and that anti-infection control is carried out
Exercises safety factors governing a magnetic environment that patients, visitors, and equipment enter into
Processes examinations on all successfully completed MRI examinations
Independently operates a super conductive magnetic resonance unit to perform all MR procedures
Scans patients according to protocols and parameters set forth by department or procedures by a Radiologist
Performs technical operation and maintenance of the computer and associated hardware/ clinical analysis of data recorded by the computer; and safety checks on patients, employees, and visitors to comply with all Veterans Healthcare Administration (VHA) Handbook, Directives, VISN 10, local policy/procedure, laws, regulations, standards and guidelines
Assists in the preparation of procedure manuals, the development of protocols and maintenance of records, the development of training programs for new MR technologists and other personnel
Maintains operations log, maintenance and service reports, files, computer data, technical parameters of each exam, archive of MR images, and inventory of supplies
Informs patients of scan delays or equipment repairs that cause excess waiting for the patient
Uses good judgement when coordinating patients according to urgency status
Assures images have made it to Patient Archiving and Communication System or reports a problem
Burns CD images for patients when needed and documents appropriately

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R) and (MR).
Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]
English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Grade Determinations:
GS-9:
Completion of one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position to be filled (GS-8), i.e., experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics needed to provide diagnostic radiologic technology (MRI) services at that level. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to:
Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines.
Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed.
Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results.
Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed.
Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers.
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.
AND
Applicants must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
The full performance level of this position is GS-9.

Physical Requirements: Must pass pre-employment examination and designate drug testing portion. Work requires long periods of standing and walking and some bending. Must be able to push, pull and lift over 40 pounds.
