This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, Office of Public Affairs in Washington, DC.

Duties

The position is located within the Media Relations Branch, Public Affairs Staff, in the office of the Director of Governmental and Public Affairs (CG-0922) U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, DC.  The incumbent is generally responsible for planning and implementing national media campaigns to convey information to the public on a variety of programs, policies, and activities.  Additionally, incumbent is responsible for coordinating responses to media inquiries, interview requests, monitoring and reporting on the media environment, assisting with contingency operations, and coordinating with Inter-agency Public Affairs offices, Headquarters staff, and Regional and District offices.

  • This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).

Qualifications

Qualifications for GS-13:  At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the federal service.  Examples of specialized experience include:  Providing timely, accurate responses to all requests for information about the Coast Guard from news media representatives, other government agencies, and others; preparing and maintaining media contact lists and arranging for mass dissemination of information materials; arranging briefings, news conferences and interviews with Coast Guard experts on topics exceeding Media Relations division expertise; monitoring safety issues, rule-making processes, procurement of new hardware, budgetary processes at the federal level, military justice procedures, force strengths, and political issues having bearing on the Coast Guard organization as well as day-to-day events involving the Coast Guard on a national and international basis. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.  If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
