The medical instrument technician is responsible for the operation of the Heart Station Area (Holter, ECG, and Stress Test) and the performance of these studies. These Studies are done at the Heart Station Area, at the bedside including noncritical and critical care areas (MICU, CCU, SICU) Ambulatory Surgery, A & D and Nursing Home Units.

Duties

Checks the computerized 3 channel EKG Machines for correct standardization and electrical interference or mechanically produced artifacts. Troubleshoots the EKG equipment and reports any problems to supervisor. Performs 12 lead EKGs on inpatients/outpatients and observes recording and corrects any artifacts. Report any acute EKG Changes abnormalities to physician immediately. Performs 12 lead EKGs in emergency Situations rapidly and without interference to treatment. Transmit the ECG electronically from EKG machine to MUSE Computer. EKGS from Broward clinic and CBOCs and EKGs from ER and intensive care units are sent to the heart station electronically. Responsible for making sure that EKGs performed in different areas are downloaded into the MUSE computer and available for the cardiologists. Electronically Distributed EKGs among various cardiologists for editing and electronic signature. The distribution list will be provided by the section chief. HOLTER STATION Prepares patients and attaches to the 24- or 48-hour Holter monitoring device so as to obtain optimum quality study. Explain the procedure to the patient and gives instructions for keeping the diary. When the patient returns the next day, removes device and takes brief history. Electronically scan the recording and print out the analysis and tracings for cardiologist review. Coordinates information seen on scanner with the information in patient's diary. Provide physician with sufficient data for interpretation, diagnosis, selection and urgency of treatment. Reports serious arrhythmias immediately. Files reports in a timely and organized manner. Make sure that all requests are scheduled and completed, and the reports reach CPRS. STRESS TEST STATION Assists with monitoring during exercise stress test, exercise stress test nuclear imagining and pharmacologic stress test. Instructs patient about test. Interviews the patient to see if patient can exercise treadmill. If the patient cannot exercise, notifies physician immediately. Connects patient to computerized EKG and Blood Pressure Monitoring Equipment checking carefully for artifacts and electrical interference and begins study making notes of and recording patient vital signs throughout exam. The Technician must Adjust the Flow of cases depending upon the number of requests and waiting time for different procedures. The technician is responsible to keep working area, neat, organized and adequately stocked with all necessary supplies. Troubleshoots and reports items needing repair to biomedical and supervisor. Responsible for downloading. Printing, filing, storage, and retrieval of acquired and distribution of acquired data. Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS a. Citizenship. Citizenship of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) b. Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions. c. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable. d. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. e. English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a. ***2 years recent experience(EKG, Holter and Stress Test Technician) in complex facility*** Experience GS-07: Do you possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-06) in the normal line of progression which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Knowledge of typical patient reactions and signs of distress including the ability to recognize, report and treat potentially lethal arrhythmias. Knowledge of common equipment settings and standardized procedures plus knowledge of common errors and corrective measures. Ability to modify procedures/positions to obtain the correct results with patients with complicating conditions such as amputations, Parkinson's disease, structural defects, and scar tissue. Ability to act as a mentor or preceptor to lower graded technicians. Ability to conduct in-service training on the EKG equipment and related instrumentation.
