Duties
Respond to alarms and combats fire requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks of complex difficulty involving facilities, shops, warehouses, fuel and explosive storage areas.
Perform firefighting and crash-rescue involving small aircraft and helicopters.
Operate hose lines, make forced entries, ventilate structures, perform or assist in rescue operations, and perform salvage and overhaul using a variety of power/manual hand tools and portable fire extinguishers.
Survey the incident to identify the materials involved, determine whether hazardous materials have been released, and evaluate the surrounding conditions.
Perform all aspects of emergency responder and victim decontamination procedures.
Requirements
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This is a Testing Drug Position (TDP). You will be subject to initial/entry testing and random drug testing.
- This position requires a pre-appointment and annual physical thereafter. Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- This position requires heavy lifting in excess of 45 pounds.
- This position is an inclement weather essential position.
- This position requires the employee to wear a uniform.
- This position requires rotating shift work.
- This position requires a valid State driver's license.
- This position requires that you take annual influenza vaccination.
- This position requires that you successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
- This position requires that you participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- This position requires the incumbent to work 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

Specialized Experience: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents; and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
