Duties
As a Health Scientist, you will:
Conduct Scientific Studies/Surveys/Investigations. Plan and conduct scientific surveys/studies or projects to identify and solve public health problems. Identify and analyze public health issues and their impact on operations that are critical to the public health community at large.
Search, synthesize and interpret information relevant to public health.
Review and analyze studies and projects assessing major and or sensitive public health issues in order to make recommendations for processes, procedures and policies related to public health programs, practices and research.
Provide technical advice and assistance to national, state and local health.
Lead collaboration on programs, projects, studies and coordinates efforts, as appropriate, with other program staff, other CDC Centers, Institutes and Offices, other federal agencies, national, State and local health agencies, and private and non-profit organizations, etc.
Prepare scientific and other articles and technical reports for publication.
Make presentations at international and national meetings.
Provide evidence-based programmatic and technical input to division products, processes, and systems development; provide technical input on the design and development of new tools, guidance, and other resources for practical application by state, local, tribal, and territorial partners.
Qualifications
Term appointments may be shortened or extended up to a maximum of four years based on the needs of the agency without further competition. Subsequent employment for CDC positions must be through the appropriate competitive process or special employment program hiring authorities.
Basic Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications: Must have a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level, which must include the following experience: planning and conducting scientific surveys/studies or projects to identify and solve public health problems.

The Federal government, as the largest employer in the Nation, can and should show the way towards achieving drug-free workplaces through programs designed to offer drug users a helping hand, and at the same time demonstrating to drug users and potential drug users that drugs will not be tolerated in the Federal workplace. The use of illegal drugs, on or off duty, by Federal employees is inconsistent not only with the law-abiding behavior expected of all citizens, but also with the special trust placed in such employees as servants of the public. All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and be subject to random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug testing upon hiring. Appointment to the position will be contingent upon a negative applicant drug test result.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
