This position is located in the Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC). This position reports to a RM MIRECC investigator and is physically located at the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center in Aurora, CO. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating research studies to include organizing regulatory documents, screening and enrolling participants into VA research studies, and for collecting, compiling, entering, and tracking research data.
Duties

This is a term appointment not to exceed 4 years. Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration of more than 1 year, but not more than 4 years and are subject to a 1 year trial period. Should the need warrant, term appointments may be extended without further competition up to a maximum of the 4 year limitation. The appointment to a term position does not confer eligibility for promotion, reassignment, or transfer to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
The Health Science Specialist is responsible for coordinating and executing research study protocols to test new hypotheses, which types of studies may include human interventional or behavioral studies, health services, clinical research, rehabilitation research, epidemiological, sociological, or public health studies. In addition, he/she will conduct experimental data collection and establish and maintain scientific collaborations with other research, clinical and support organizations. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Coordinating and executing research study protocols intended to test new hypotheses in areas such as: Health Services issues relevant to VA, Clinical Research Studies relevant to VA, and Epidemiological and/or Statistical problems relevant to VA
Searching and reviewing relevant published literature and developing an understanding of the background of the area to be studied
Coordinating and executing study goals, objectives, procedures and methods of testing, data collection, review, validation and analysis techniques to be used
Applying inclusion/exclusion criteria for research subjects, informed consent documentation and protocol submissions intended for scientific and ethical review and approval
Coordinating the work of a single or multi-site research study and work collaboratively with the study team
Screening and evaluating candidates for a study, using the protocol's exclusion and inclusion criteria
Developing highly detailed and comprehensive standardized operating procedures for scientific protocols
Performing and/or assisting the Principle Investigator (Pl) with qualitative and/or quantitative research related to the study
Assisting the Pl with preparation and submission of Research and Development (R&D) paperwork, meeting all administrative requirements including submission of review documents for the institutional review board (IRB), R&D, or other committee reviews required
Initiating and performing experimental data collection through scientific methodologies specified in the study protocols
Collaborating with project director, to facilitate the running of the study, including conducting semistructured clinical interviews, neurospychology assessments, and/or assisting with monitoring survey data collection and conducting fidelity checks to ensure that the survey is being appropriately
Conducted
Validating and quality checking data, managing data recording and analysis; summation of results, and development of reports intended for the use of the study director (Principal Investigator)
Maintaining scientific collaborations with other research, clinical, and support organizations at the host
and collaborating institutions
Maintaining archives of completed studies and associated documentation, raw data, regulatory compliance documents, analyses and reports
Preparing reports for submission to sponsoring agencies and presenting study issues, methods and findings in report, graph, chart table or other form
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m.

Qualifications
Basic Requirement: The following are basic requirements for appointment as a Health Science Specialist in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), which all applicants must met.
Basic Education: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Minimum Requirement: In addition to meeting the basic requirements one of the following minimum requirement criteria must be met to be qualified for this position.
Specialized Experience (GS-09): You must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (i.e., GS-07) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Qualifying examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: coordinating clinical research activities; gathering data for clinical research projects; screening and recruiting participants for clinical research projects; and gathering statistical and narrative data on clinical research project status. OR,
Education (GS-09): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. NOTE: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Combination (GS-09): Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education as described above.
