This position serves as a Pipefitter within the Engineering service at the VA Medical Center in New York, NY.
Duties
Performs periodic maintenance inspection and repairs to complicated high pressure steam distribution systems and piping, heating equipment and plumbing fixtures; makes major repairs to systems and overhauls equipment; as assigned makes alteration, modifications and/or installations; more specifically.

Analyzes and corrects defects and malfunctions in steam dis?tribution system pressure reducing stations, heating system and pneumatic control stations.
Trouble shoots, analyzes and corrects defects and malfunctions in steam operated equipment such as sterilizers, large kitchen cookers and dishwashers.
Makes alterations, modifications and/or installations; for example, new sinks in cardiopulmonary lab., oxygen and vacuum piping, drinking water equipment, steam cooking equipment.
Plans and lays out work, including determining material required; sets up route, determines pitch, level, etc., and lays out all piping arrangements, including vacuum piping, as required.
Uses blueprints or sketches to lay out work, and changes locations of pipes where plans are in conflict with other facilities or equipment; determines most advantageous locations for running pipe, where pipes are to go through floors, walls or ceilings, etc.
Troubleshoots and makes repairs to the pneumatic tube system; traces line and clears stoppages, repairing conveyor belts, gear reducers, and filtering system.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8am until 4:30pm

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Works from ladders, scaffolds, platforms and in cramped hard to reach places, which requires incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Required to lift carry and set up equipment, heavy pipes and machinery weighing up to 50 pounds. Receives assistance on items weighing over 50 pounds.
Work is performed inside and outside (in all types of inclement weather) and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Occasionally required to work in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. Is exposed to injurious chemicals, fumes and infectious disease when replacing sections of drainage lines. Is frequently exposed to the possibility of scalding, uncomfortable heat conditions, strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. May be exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
