This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to provide information and interpretive services to visitors concerning the natural and historic features of the areas of interest on the unit where assigned.

Duties

Serves as lead guide on two completely different tours involving normally up to, but in some cases exceeding, 30 visitors (per hour/tour). Performs work to provide a range of guide services for small parties that can be easily accommodated within the physical area. Greets each tour group, collects tour tickets, explains tour rules, policies and procedures, identifies any special needs of tour members and screens group to eliminate pets, intoxicated visitors, children under 12 without adult supervision, etc. Orderly loads and unloads group into and out of elevators and buses to and from the tour sites. Tours that include visits to caverns involve special procedures. During the course of the tours presents an interpretive message about the caverns and the surrounding area including such points of interest as cave formations, history, fauna, flora, geology, cave-surface relationships, etc. Also answers a large variety of related questions. Maintains control of the group, advises on hazardous areas and tactfully enforces safety regulations and rules of conduct such as prohibition against smoking, touching formations, etc. Also serves as trail guide. As such, follows the tour group to insure group stays together, turns off lights, and assists in answering questions and handling emergency situations. Observes and learns from more experienced guides serving as lead guide on the tour. Serves in an information booth in the Visitor Information Center greeting visitors. Answering questions about the Forest Service, the caverns exhibits, recreational opportunities in the surrounding area and providing recreational maps and brochures to the general public. Introduces programs being presented in the facility auditorium and operates audio visual equipment. Patrols parking lot and adjacent areas answering questions, explaining rules and regulations, and observing for and reporting acts of vandalism or other types of unacceptable conduct. Occasionally administers first aid to visitors.

  • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. GS-04: Applicants must have six months of any type of work that demonstrated the ability to perform the work of the position or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation AND six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-3 grade level; OR an associate's degree or two years of successfully completed education above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in courses such as American history, science, and/or public speaking; OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. Examples of General Experience includes: Selling merchandise, collecting and accounting for fees or other monies, greeting visitors, disseminating information, providing directions, or other work which required dealing with people on a recurring basis; and that indicates the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience examples that involved oral presentation of historical, scientific, or program information to groups; or developing and/or revising technical, historical, or scientific information for oral presentation to groups. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
