About the Position: This position is working within the Military Correctional Complex and requires frequent, direct contact with inmates.
The maximum entry age for positions covered under the special Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) retirement is 37 years old. Individuals who are past the maximum entry age limit, but previously served in a primary position, may be reinstated if they meet the reentry requirements specified in Department of Defense Instruction, Number 1400.25 Volume 336.
Duties
Planning and administering a comprehensive sports program for the United States Disciplinary Barracks (USDB), Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility (JRCF) and Trusty Unit (TU).
Adapts various activities to the wide range of inmate interests, needs and limitations.
Ensure the sports program complies with the American Correctional Associate (ACA) standards and with all applicable correctional standards for safety and security.
Monitor recreation areas and ensure tools, etc are accounted for and to ensure proper security and safety of inmates.
Provide training on the proper use of equipment and safety techniques as it relates to the various sports activities.
Coordinate all activities and schedules to ensure compliance with security requirements and adequate correctional staff support.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Employee must be able to pass a Criminal History Background Check. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify
whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Employee must undergo screening for tuberculosis upon employment and periodic screening thereafter.
- All Army Corrections Command employees are required to take 40 hours of training annually. Employees will receive basic training in
inmate supervision and security as well as specialized training in their field.
- This position requires an alternate work schedule to include evenings, weekends and holidays. Work hours are 1230pm to 930pm 5 days a week.
- This position meets eligibility as a primary/rigorous law enforcement officer (LEO) position in accordance with 5 U.S.C. 8331(20) 5 U.S.C. 8401(17), 5 C.F.R. 831 Subpart I, and 5 C.F.R. 842, Subpart H.
- The work requires frequent, direct contact in the detention of inmates convicted of offenses against the punitive articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
- Regularly-assigned contacts with inmates expose the employee to daily stress and the threat of potentially dangerous situations such as verbal and/or physical attack by the inmate population.

BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR GS-0188 POSITION:
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree with a major study in general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education.
OR
Experience that demonstrated the ability to apply the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
Planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs.
Planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels.
Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management.
Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience adapting and developing program activities to meet the divergent needs of an inmate population and the ability to conduct classes and training to coaches, participants, and/or officials for various sports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Recreation or Physical Education.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
