This Lead Paramedic position is in Special Care services at the VA Maine Medical Center, located at the Togus location. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.
Duties
Duties:
The Lead Paramedic performs technical duties as a Paramedic (Basic and Advanced Life Support Services). In addition to performing all duties and responsibilities of a Paramedic the incumbent will identify, distribute, and balance the workload and tasks among the Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) in accordance with established workflow and/or skill level. Makes day-to-day adjustments to accomplish the workload, in accordance with established priorities or directives from the supervisor and ensures timely accomplishment of assigned team tasks. Major Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Review the work of EMTs and Paramedics to ensure work priorities, methods, deadlines and quality have been met.
Train, or arranges training, of the EMT and Paramedic team members and uses the methods and techniques of team building to accomplish tasks or projects.
Report on daily job performance, progress, and training needs to the supervisor.
Serve as a coach, facilitator and/or negotiator in coordinating team initiatives, and in building concurrence for activities/goals among team members.
Prepare reports and maintains records of work accomplishments and administrative information as required.
Provide oversight and coordination of process improvement initiatives, assures teamwork, and addresses customer service issues.
Respond to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses, sometimes encountering situations which may be life threatening.
Determine and prioritize appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistance.
Perform patient triage and take/records patient's vital signs as needed.
Perform physical examinations and obtain patient history, assesses status of patient's systems, motor and sensory skills, and level of consciousness.
Make independent preliminary assessment of the patient's condition and selects from a variety of prescribed protocols.
Prioritize treatment for patients having multiple problems and employs a variety of advanced emergency medicine techniques, methods, and equipment during transport to the appropriate medical facility.
Administers basic and advanced life support care at emergency scenes in accordance with established medical standards.
Follow safety procedures, utilize safety equipment, and monitor work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
Operate or utilize various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools and supplies.
Provide treatment based on protocol, within prescribed limits set by the Emergency Department provider.
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Chief of Medicine or their designee.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/25/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-10 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-09. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Individual Occupational Requirement: Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-09 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: responding to on-site emergencies of varying medical issues; independently assessing the patient's condition and treating the patient in accordance with prescribed protocols; perform transport duties of patients during emergent situations; and reporting on daily work performance and delegating workload as necessary.
Certifications and Licenses Requirement: Lead Paramedics shall possess and maintain the following:
Current Basic Life Support Provider certification.
Certification as State of Maine and/or National Registered Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic).
Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
Valid and unrestricted state driver's license.

Physical Requirements: The Lead Paramedic's work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients in a variety of situations. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients, frequently under adverse conditions or in confined areas. Incumbent may be required to spend prolonged periods in protective breathing apparatus and protective clothing during chemical, nuclear, biological, or hazardous materials incidents/exercises.
