This position is located at the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta, ME and performs technical duties as a Paramedic (Basic and Advanced Life Support Services). In addition to performing all the duties and responsibilities of a Paramedic, the Supervisory Paramedic exercises supervisory authorities and responsibilities over the Ambulance Services Program (ASP).
Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Oversees all aspects of the Ambulance Services Program (ASP).
Creates, adjusts, and approves ASP employee schedules as well as reviewing and approving leave requests.
Prepares forecasts of funds needed for equipment, materials, and supplies.
Interviews candidates for positions and recommends appointment, promotion, or reassignment.
Provides informal feedback and performance evaluations.
Responds to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses.
Determines and prioritizes appropriate medical treatment/procedures.
Performs patient triage and records patient's vital signs.
Administers basic and advanced life support care at emergency scene in accordance with established medical standards.
Operates or utilizes various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment.
Operates the emergency transport vehicle and uses telephone and radio communications equipment and systems.
Assists in lifting and carrying patients into or out of transport vehicles and into treatment facility.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Rotating shifts to include nights, weekends and holidays
Supervisory Paramedics may work rotating shifts, including holidays, and are subject to occasional recall to maintain adequate coverage of the Emergency Department and ambulance service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Mandatory overtime may be required due to run times that may extend beyond normal scheduled work hours.

Qualifications
THIS POSITION REQUIRES:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
This position includes Selective Placement Factors (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED to receive credit for further consideration.
1. Must possess and maintain a current Basic Life Support Provider certification.
2. Must possess certification as a National Registered Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic).
3. Must possess and maintain current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
In addition to the English language proficiency and selective placement factors you must also meet the specialized experience.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-10) in the Federal Service that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position (Supervisory Paramedic). Specialized experience is experience that includes but is not limited to responding to accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness; supervising and/or administering life-sustaining aid to patients; performing patient triage and employing a variety of advanced emergency medicine procedures during transport; planning the work of other paramedics and subordinate staff members; and observing workers' performance and conducting performance appraisals. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates and hours worked per week.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successful completion of a Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree and is directly related to the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education (beyond the second year) and experience, described above, in order to meet total qualification requirements.

Physical Requirements: The Supervisory Paramedic frequently encounters unsafe or hazardous work environments. The work involves loading and unloading patients, either by wheelchair or stretcher, and seeing that the patient is secured.
