This Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) position is assigned to the Lebanon VA Medical Center. The incumbent performs the most complex imaging studies available in the modality as required. The assignment requires expert specialization in complex areas of MRI and the associated safety requirements associated with working in a potentially dangerous ferromagnetic environment.

Duties

Position Title: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI) Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 2:00pm - 10:00pm Major Duties: Technologist will prioritize workload, rearranging schedule to accommodate critical and emergent exams. Technologist will identify patient with two identifiers (full name and full social security number or full date of birth). Technologist will explain the exam to competent patients in a courteous and respectful manner so that patients understand what is being done. Employee is responsible to screen all patients and personnel entering zones 3 and 4 for contraindications to MRI. Employee follows all applicable magnet safety precautions. Employee must be able to register and edit exams; access patients' electronic medical record to review allergies, lab values, medications, consent, and providers' orders. Technologist is able to perform a wide range of diagnostic MRI exams including but not limited to: extremities, chest, abdomen, spine. Technologist s able to prepare and administer IV contrast per Providers orders. Technologist is able to use a power injector to administer IV contrast. Technologist is also competent to start an IV. IV contrast will be documented in the patients electronic medical record. Technologist will visibly monitor the patient for any adverse reaction to contrast and notify a Physician if necessary. The technologist is competent to adjust positioning and technical exposure factors to meet the unique needs of the Radiology department customers. All images will be properly oriented, identified and labeled. PACS will be used to store and retrieve images. Technologist will participate in obtaining informed consent when necessary. Technologist will participate and document "time-out" as necessary Technologist will perform and document medication reconciliation as necessary. Employee will maintain clean and organized work area. Employee will maintain adequate supplies in radiology rooms. Employee is able to identify and clean reusable medical equipment according to department SOP and manufacturers' directions. Technologist performs restart, QA, and tube warm up as necessary. Technologist informs supervisor and Biomedical engineering of any equipment problems. Technologist keeps abreast of technological advances and shares information with co-workers. Technologist is responsible to generate disc containing radiology and vascular exams during evening, night, weekend, and holiday tour of duty. Technologist is responsible to carry and respond to pager during day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday tour of duty. Technologist is responsible to contact Radiologist (when requested) during evening, night, weekend, and holiday tour of duty. Employee practices proper hand hygiene. Employee uses personal protective equipment as necessary. Employee will practice "hand off communication" to communicate necessary patient information to the next health care worker. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.) Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE) Physical Requirements.The work requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, and bending. The employee must be able to lift up to 30 pounds. Employee must have the physical strength and agility to position patients for a variety of diagnostic examinations. English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 USC 7402(d) and 7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and certification that are part of the basic requirements of the DRT occupation. NOTE: Each uncertified VHA DRT who was permanently employed on June 21, 1986, and whose competence in the safe administration of ionizing radiation was affirmed, in writing, by a VA licensed physician not later than January 1, 1987, is considered fully qualified. These employees may be promoted, changed to lower grade, or reassigned within the GS-0647 occupational series. Any employee initially retained in this manner who leaves this job series loses protected status and must meet the full requirements in effect at the time of reentry. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-9 Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Assignment. Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic quality management type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR). This specialty modality requires additional knowledge of superconducting magnets, the physics of superconducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. The technologist must be educated in the safety factors governing a magnetic environment that patients, visitors, and equipment enter. The practitioner must have specialized knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and how it relates to the soft tissues and vessels of the human body. The technologist must also have specialized knowledge in the radio-frequency surface coils required for each specific anatomical area to be imaged. This assignment may also perform basic magnetic resonance safety program duties. Technologists must be knowledgeable in contrast media, power injectors, and PACS. DRT assignments that include performance of independent duties in this subspecialty require advanced ARRT (MR) certification. Preferred Experience: None.
