The primary duties of this position are performed in the outpatient pharmacy area of the pharmacy department and the purpose of this position is to improve patient satisfaction with the outpatient pharmacy prescription pick-up process. The major skill set required is excellent customer service skills. A consistent friendly and respectful reaction/interaction is essential. Verbal and written communication skills reflecting courteous, tactful, and a cooperative manner is key to this position.

VA Careers - Pharmacy: https://youtube.com/embed/Fn_ickNBEws Duties include but not limited to: Incumbent is responsible for providing a variety of complex technical and automated functions that require the application of extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and pharmacy practices. The incumbent is expected to work with considerable autonomy but under the guidance of a registered pharmacist. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff. Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substances policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. Work primarily in the outpatient pharmacy waiting area, assisting patients entering the outpatient pharmacy waiting area to facilitate timely and accurate delivery of prescription medication. Answer patient inquiries related to process questions. Provide patient education on the medication refill process, the use of automated telephone system, the use of the internet refill system and general information on the outpatient pharmacy process to ensure a patient centered program. Assist other technicians in scanning refill documents mailed in by patients on a daily basis as required, as well as requests made in person by veterans. Treat all patient contacts with respect and diligence while seeking to solve patient problems including referring to other VA resources when needed. Assist the pharmacy supervisor with compilation of data for workload statics and analysis to detect problems with outpatient pharmacy prescription pick-up process. Interact with Patient Care Advocates as appropriate to meet the needs of the veterans. Routinely reviews computer medication profile for prescriptions duplication, therapeutic duplication, prescription noncompliance, and allergies/adverse drug reactions. Independently inputs refill prescriptions into VistA computer system for immediate or mail-out processing. Serves as back-up for Controlled Substances technician when needed and proficient in all aspects of controlled substances prescription dispensing and record keeping. Performs other Duties as assigned by leadership. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met. Pharmacy Technician, GS-07 (1) Experience. One year experience at the next lower level and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): (2) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities *(a) Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities. (b) Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes. (c) Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff. (d) Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. (e) Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. (f) Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. (g) Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. (h) Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems.
