The lead pharmacy technician performs duties independently which consists of significant scope, complexity and leads at least three GS-7 or more technicians. This position may be in Inpatient or Outpatient Pharmacy. The pharmacy technician lead is responsible for the guidance, training, and technical direction of all staff and volunteers within the designated area of pharmacy. Employee will evaluate and coordinate the workflow and technical aspects of pharmacy operations.

Duties

Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology, and polices in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Note: See Specialized Area in the Definitions Section. Skill in training and orienting new existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper polices and procedures. Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy. The duties and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician Lead include but are not limited to the following: Lead Functions: The lead pharmacy technician assists the pharmacy supervisor in quality improvement activities by participating in medical center and service process assessment and action teams and continually seeks to improve services. Assesses workload volume throughout the day, identifying backlogs, and makes staffing adjustments as needed to meet organizational goals. Identified areas of duplication of efforts and develop solutions to streamline processes, reduce waste, cost savings, and improvement patient care. Responsible for organizing and assisting the pharmacy technician team to ensure assigned tasks are timely and accurately completed for their program area. Promotes harmonious relationships within the work environment and support the needs of the team and customer. Listens to informal complaints of employees and other customers in a helpful and timely fashion. If not able to remedy s situation, the lead will notify the pharmacy supervisor. Assists in training and orientating new and existing pharmacy technicians and students on policy and procedures. Identifies and reports developmental and training needs to ensure safety and quality control for their program area. Develops training schedules in coordination with the pharmacy education program manager and assists in maintaining documentation for all pharmacy technicians and students. Effectively evaluates pharmacy activities to management to obtain short-and long-range objectives and goals. Conducts technician meetings in conjunction with the pharmacy supervisor to assure proper updates of departmental and hospital communications. Assists the pharmacy supervisor in the developmental of policies and procedures and participate in departmental goal planning and quality improvement activities. Maintain competence by participating in staff developmental programs. Serves as on-line back up to other pharmacy technicians within the designated area of pharmacy. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. You must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Education or Experience. Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification. Candidates must be certified by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Certification is required at grades GS-6 and above. Grade Determinations: GS-08 Experience. One year experience at the next lower level GS-07, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assigned specific KSAs designated by an asterisk(*): Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1.
