The Education Coordinator reports directly to the Chief Nurse of Education within the Nursing Service. He/she provides first line oversight of clinical education, Nurse Educators, curriculum design, Donna Wright Model and other competencies, and professional development program for the Nursing Education Service. The Education Coordinator oversees the daily operations of the Nurse Educators and other assigned staff within the Nursing Education Service.

The Education Coordinator possesses intimate knowledge of nursing federal regulations, VHA guidelines, current standards of care, educational methodologies and strategies, and compliance guidelines. The incumbent practices as an RN and applies the nursing process when educating and training staff to ensure a competent nursing workforce throughout the Fayetteville VA enterprise. The Education Coordinator contributes to strategic planning, innovation, recruitment, and retention of staff, and promotes shared decision-making and enhances communication and processes within the service and enterprise.
He/she executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches in the management of educational programs and supervision of staff. He/she performs other related duties as assigned.
Oversees the daily operations of the Nurse Educators and specific programs to ensure the work of the department is tracked and accomplished.
Supervises the Nursing Education staff under his/her line authority in accordance with VA regulations.
Collaborates with members of the healthcare team to facilitate coordinated contribution to education curricula through problem identification, analysis, and resolution.
Maintains productive day to day operations of the Educators and the Nursing Education Service to include identifying, analyzing, and resolving problems.
Leads training project teams and manages training activities to effectively implement strategic business objectives in driving quality, competence, skills development, compliance, and effectiveness.
Implements new policies, standard operating procedures, and initiatives in compliance with VA Central Office, the Joint Commission, and other regulating body standards.
Manages workplace issues with consistency and documents appropriately.
Demonstrates knowledge of professional development.
Collaborates with managers and supervisors to determine the amount and type of training required to meet the needs of the nursing workforce. Effectively assigns and delegates work.
Serves as an advocate for professional nursing practice.
Utilizes principles of adult learning and education in preparing and implementing educational programs.
Links education curriculum with Medical Center mission and strategic directive.
Consistently models professional conduct in routine and stressful situations.
Incorporates evidence-based practice into education and training in support of the care of Veterans.
Demonstrates flexibility in responding to emergent staff training needs and assigns staff accordingly.
Serves as the Acting Chief Nurse of Education in his/her absence.
Stays in close contact with VA Nursing Programs, EES, VACO, other federal agencies, outside educational institutions (public and vocational schools, community, and senior colleges and universities), and local government agencies to select and secure appropriate resources and faculty for Medical Center training and to avoid unnecessary duplication of training programs.
Oversees the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of education programs for staff.
Maintains current BLS/ACLS provider certification.
Supports administration of Scholarship/Financial program such as NNEI, EISP; collaborates with current NNEI Coordinator.
Attends and/or participates in national conferences, public meetings, and local college events, as a subject matter expert for Nursing Education functions.
Shares professional expertise on assigned Medical Center Committees, departmental services, community partnerships and task forces.
Coaches Education staff in the concepts of team building and effective leadership strategies.
Serves as a resource for staff in the interpretation of VA directives, memorandums, nursing standards, protocols, and medical center policies.

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Registered Nurses:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles.
