This position is located in the Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD), Office of the Assistant Attorney General. ENRD brings cases against violators of the nation's civil and criminal pollution-control laws; it defends environmental challenges to government programs and activities and represents the United States in matters concerning the stewardship of the nation's natural resources and public lands.

Duties

This is a highly visible position that supports the Office of the Assistant Attorney General ("OAAG") in the Division. The individual selected for this position will support several Deputy Assistant Attorneys General ("DAAGs") and, as directed, the Assistant Attorney General. The individual must be able to: liaison with high-ranking officials and their staff throughout the federal government in a competent and professional manner, communicate with officials of the Department, Congress, the White House, other government agencies, and private organizations, to obtain information; and provide assistance on administrative, technical, operational, and/or program matters. This is a fast-paced environment where accuracy and timeliness to tasks and customers is of critical importance. The individual selected for this position must be proactive, dependable, and capable. The position requires good judgment, high ethical standards, ability to prioritize, excellent writing skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. As a Staff Assistant, your typical work assignments may include the following: Manage appointments for the DAAGS, and, as directed, for the Assistant Attorney General, with authority for commitment of time; coordinate schedules of visits; screen telephone calls and visitors to the office; and handle routine inquiries requiring knowledge of administrative procedures. Refer inquiries requiring technical program knowledge to an appropriate staff member for follow-up and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. Use office automation software packages and equipment to type, edit, and format letters memoranda, reports, and other documents. Compose correspondence and type documents from rough draft into final form ensuring accuracy with regard to format, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and distribution of copies. Utilize electronic tracking systems, including the OAAG correspondence tracking system, other DOJ tracking systems, time and attendance systems, and travel systems. Act as a liaison between members of the OAAG, and with Section Chiefs and their staff, managers, and staff within the organization and provide advice related to procedures, reports, requirements, and other matters necessary to implement the Assistant Attorney General's policies, directives, and instructions. Sign correspondence and certain procedural authorizations in the name of a DAAG or the Assistant Attorney General when previous instructions have covered the matter. Screen publications, directives, periodicals, and bring those of significance to OAAG members' attention. Provide general office supply and equipment support services such as obtaining standard office supplies and assist with teleconference processes including set up and network connections.

Qualifications

To qualify for GS-9: You must have one of the following: A. One year of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-7 Federal grade level or above providing management support on administrative programs; ensuring that documents are prepared in accordance with established organizational policies and procedures; and using computer software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) to analyze and compile information to produce documents or reports relevant to an organization; OR B. A masters or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Such education demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. This education was obtained in or verified by a U.S. accredited college or university; OR C. A combination of education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. (Only graduate education in excess of the first full year may be used in this calculation). To qualify for GS-11: You must have one of the following: A. One year of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-9 Federal grade level or above performing administrative support for a high-level executive or manager. This experience must include: using a variety of software programs to prepare and edit reports, correspondence, and other written materials; locating, assembling, and composing information for various reports, inquiries, and correspondence; maintaining calendar of appointments and events and screening visitors and telephone calls; conducting research to provide information on administrative and operational issues; reviewing and interpreting organizational policies and procedures on program and operational issues and using this information to make decisions for the office; and making travel arrangements and organizing meetings and conferences; OR B. A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three (3) full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; OR LL.M., if related; OR C. A combination of education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. (Only graduate education in excess of the second year may be used in this calculation). Qualifying education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Note: Experience applying legal research is highly desirable, but not required. All applicants are required to submit a writing sample. This can include papers, or portions of papers, submitted for classes or writing assignments done for a previous employer. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skill and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time in Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements (one year at the next lower grade) by the closing date of announcement.
