Duties
Functions as a diagnostic parasitologist to analyze samples from mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, New-World and Old-World nonhuman primates, pigs, sheep, dogs, fish, amphibians and reptiles.
Analyzes ectoparasites utilizing dissecting microscopes; analyzes endoparasites by light microscopy of gastrointestinal contents.
Makes accurate diagnoses of parasitic infections.
Performs necropsy on mice, rats, rabbits.
Obtains blood samples for serologic analyses and samples for PCR testing.
Responsibility for training new contract staff on techniques and procedures in veterinary parasitology, blood collection techniques, rodent anatomy and necropsy techniques.
Performs other duties related to the overall diagnostic laboratories including but not limited to Property Management, review and process billing data in a computer generated system, contract review and implementation.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-401 position you must meet the following Education Requirements:
A. Have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university;
OR
B. Have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position,
AND
Have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.
Additionally, in order to qualify at the GS-11 level, you must:
A. Have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree;
OR
B. Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performs endoparasite and ectoparasite examinations on principally but not limited to the following: mice, rats, old world monkeys, and new world monkeys and additionally on guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, fish, amphibians and reptiles; accurately identify and diagnose ectoparasite and endoparasite infections in laboratory animals; euthanizing, collecting and processing rodent samples to identify specific viral, bacterial, protozoal and parasitic diseases of laboratory animals; reporting data to animal users and investigators and maintaining a database of laboratory findings.
OR
C. Have a combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
Additionally, in order to qualify at the GS-12 level, you must:
Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: independently performs complex endoparasite and ectoparasite examinations on principally but not limited to the following: mice, rats, old world monkeys, and new world monkeys and additionally on guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, fish, amphibians and reptiles; independently and accurately identify and diagnose complex ectoparasite and endoparasite infections in laboratory animals; euthanizing, collecting and independently processing rodent samples to identify specific viral, bacterial, protozoal and parasitic diseases of laboratory animals; analyze results and presenting reporting data to animal users and investigators along with maintaining a database of laboratory findings.
