The duties of this Pharmacy Technician position include the provision of distributive services to support patient care in the ambulatory care and inpatient medical/surgical/mental health practice areas. Duties include but are not limited to:
Provides exceptional customer service to Veterans and team members
Maintains responsibility for complex technical and automated support functions.
Assists in training new employees.
Advises patients and staff on problem resolution and triages calls which requires pharmacist involvement.
Assist patients in maintaining medication therapy continuity.
Interprets orders, assembles materials, prepares, packages, labels, completes required documentation, includes required handouts, and sets up finished prescriptions in an organized manner for the pharmacist.
Ensures proper distribution of completed prescription by verification and documentation of patient/caregiver identity.
Adherence to inventory control procedures with attention to (and documentation of) product shortages, increased usage, product description discrepancies, use of inventory management system, and timely appropriate stocking of delivered pharmaceuticals and supplies.
Displays competence with good manufacturing/compounding practices through demonstration and/or actual work performance.
Adheres to procedures relating to quality control of pharmacy products.
Processes prescription packages for mailing utilizing USPS and UPS.

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 11, 2023. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be July 24, 2022, with subsequent cut-off dates every two weeks. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience
Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at the GS-6 level and above. A copy of your certification must be submitted with your application.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
Pharmacy Technician GS-6
Experience. One year of experience equivalent to at least the next lower level (GS-5) that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. You must fully meet the KSAs at the GS-5 level which includes: ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment; knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique; knowledge of basic inventory procedures; and knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06.
Physical Requirements: The work is primarily performed while sitting, though some work may require periods of standing. The regular and recurring work of this position involves sitting at a desk, conferences, meetings, etc. Frequent use of automobile and public conveyances may be required. Occasional lifting of boxes is also required.
