This position is located with the (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Wheat Health Genetics & Quality Unit in Pullman, WA
Duties
Maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse, and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological).
Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies samples in the field and updates supporting records.
Prepare solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse
Calibrates and modifies equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
Assists in one or more phases of the research process by performing technical duties in the following laboratory environment, field environment, and greenhouse environment
Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.
Operates and maintains a variety of highly specialized complex equipment which must be calibrated and synchronized to achieve desired results
Performs the full range of techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment in performing fieldwork.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
GS-06
Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-06 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience includes growing plants for field or greenhouse experiments; collecting or evaluating plant, soil or crop samples in a field environment; monitoring and managing pests in field or greenhouse environments; recording data and results related to plant, soil or crop research; operating and maintaining standard field equipment and irrigation; assisting with maintaining inventory of pesticides and fertilizers.

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Biology, Microbiology, Soil Sciences, Plant Sciences, Crop Sciences, and Agronomy.
GS-07
Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience includes growing plants for field or greenhouse experiments; collecting or evaluating plant, soil or crop samples in a field environment; participating in an experiment or research project related to plant, soil, or crop samples in a field environment; operating and maintaining standard field equipment and irrigation; keeping detailed records of management practices related to agricultural field research; maintaining inventory of pesticides and fertilizers; and tabulating analyzing, and summarizing data using personal computers and software packages.

Education:
One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Biology, Microbiology, Soil Sciences, Plant Sciences, Crop Sciences, and Agronomy.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above.
