This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Digitization Division. The incumbent serves in an organizational unit within one of the program offices under the Chief Operating Officer, protecting records and ensuring their proper storage, conservation, and reproduction; application of restrictions on records; and creating substantial descriptive products intended to enable discovery and use of records.

Duties

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position. As a Archivist, you will: Prepare description of complex bodies of records for inclusion in the Archival Research Catalog.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. To be qualified for this position at the GS-11 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes: Experience utilizing various systems or databases to locate, analyze, index, and manage archival records.AND Experience collaborating and participating in projects describing or preserving a body of records.AND Experience executing communication strategies, plans, or activities. OR You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. OR You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 36 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) of graduate education is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. To be qualified for this position at the GS-9 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes: Experience researching and reporting on archival records. AND Experience providing customer service to various audiences through oral and written communication techniques. OR 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (i.e., beyond the first year) of graduate education is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. To be qualified for this position at the GS-7 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes: Preforming archival functions, such as monitoring, researching and managing documents. AND Experience communicating and assisting with various audiences. OR 1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement. OR You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. NOTE: Only education in excess of the basic education requirement (i.e., beyond bachelor'sdegree) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-11, you must have been at the GS-09level for 52 weeks. For the GS-09, you must have been at the GS-07level for 52 weeks. For the GS-07, you must have been at the GS-05level for 52 weeks.

Individual Occupational Requirement
Basic requirements for all grades:
  • Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
OR
  • Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
