This position is located in the Department of Surgery, within the Specialty Care Directorate at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, North Chicago, Illinois. The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) is larger than just a single facility, but rather a system of facilities throughout Northeastern Illinois which provide medical and dental services to U.S. Military Veterans, Recruits, Active Duty and eligible beneficiaries.
Duties
Major Duties:
The incumbent works closely with and directly supports the Residency Program Director in the administration of the Podiatry Residency Program, University of Chicago, Ophthalmology resident, Rush Northshore Urology Program, Northwestern PA Program and Rosalind Franklin University CRNA Program. This position largely oversees its day-to-day operations of these programs. In addition, the incumbent provides general administrative and clerical work to the Office of the Department of Surgery. The incumbent works closely with the Office of Academic Affairs, in the conduction of student activities. Based on a solid working knowledge of the organization and substantive programs under the supervisor's management, the incumbent resolves problems associated with the administrative and program work of the office.
Program Support for Residency Program (50%)
-The incumbent assists the Residency Program Director with the processing, orientation, scheduling, and logistics for the Rosalind Franklin University, Scholl's School of Podiatry, and other programs described above.
- Establishes familiarity and maintains currency with standards and regulations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the accrediting and governing body for residency programs.
- The incumbent ensures students beginning their rotations have met all established requirements of the FHCC for rotation at the facility, including mandated educational coursework such as ACLS, BLS and other mandatory employee trainings, and clearances through the Employee Health Clinic and Human Resources.
Security Officer Support Duties for Dept of Surgery (20%)
- The incumbent ensures students have met all security requirements and are properly vetted before they are granted access to sensitive patient data.
- The incumbent also ensures that all residents and students properly separate from the FHCC, including the surrender of any FHCC identifying/access-granting badges, pagers, and revocation of computer access.
- As the Department Security Officer (DSO), the incumbent processes and sponsors residents, fellows, students, and employees -including Title 38 professional employees - for network accounts, email addresses, Vista and CPRS, and, where indicated, AHLTA/CHCS access.
Administrative Support for Dept of Surgery (20%)
- The incumbent receives calls, greets visitors and directs to staff members only those contacts needing their attention or action.
- Takes care of routine matters and on the basis of knowledge of the programs or operations refers other inquiries to appropriate personnel
- Incumbent personally responds to routine and non-technical requests for information such as status of reports, duty status of office personnel, suspense date for matters requiring compliance and similar information readily available from the files
- Incumbent inventories and orders office supplies for Department of Surgery and maintains a purchase card.
- Composes routine correspondence on other subjects as outlined in regulations and procedures specifically required by the manger and/or key staff members

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: providing administrative support; collecting, compiling and tracking data and information; processing documents and reports; familiar with word and excel.
*Education is usually not credible above the GS-5 for this position; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
