Duties
This position is located under the Deputy Administrator for Naval Reactors, National Nuclear Security Administration. The Deputy Administrator for Naval Reactors is also the Director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and the Deputy Commander, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Directorate, Naval Sea Systems Command. As a Nuclear Engineer (Deputy Director, Reactor Engineering), you will:
Serve as the Deputy Director for reactor design, nuclear physics, and fleet support.
Act for the Director, Reactor Engineering Division, with full authority in his/her absence.
Convenes Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) senior managers to coordinate and propose Program and Division policy with regard to overall NNPP policy execution including establishing standards for execution of naval nuclear powered fleet support requirements.
Direct and coordinate the efforts of personnel in the DOE, DON, shipyard lead design agents, reactor plant design agents, reactor plant planning yards, reactor plant prime contractors, vendors, ships force, public and private nuclear-capable shipyards, and intermediate maintenance activities in accomplishing designs, construction, repairs, maintenance, modification, operation, and testing of reactors and associated components.
Serve as the recognized senior technical advisor in the areas of reactor design, nuclear physics, and operating fleet support and serve as senior technical consultant to provide direction, leadership, guidance, and advice to Division personnel in their interactions with ships, shipyards, prototypes, field offices, laboratories, vendors, and other agencies.
Oversee activities across the Division to ensure consistent technical standards and work execution.
Develop long-range technical plans to meet Division and NNPP goals and propose adjustments to the Division technical plans and personnel resources to the Director as needed to execute Division goals.
Ensure strategic alignment among NNPP senior managers and laboratory management on Reactor Engineering initiatives.
Provide senior technical perspective for the selection and qualification of operators for nuclear powered ships and prototypes, including implementing training sessions; conducting oral examinations; and overseeing written examination development, administration, and grading.
Represent the Deputy Administrator for Naval Reactors in meetings with top-level Department of Defense (DOD), DOE, and DON officials as needed to support Division responsibilities.
Perform supervisory duties.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-15 or equivalent) in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in nuclear propulsion systems engineering of sufficient scope and quality in order to direct and coordinate the research, design, development, production, inspection, test, installation, maintenance, and performance evaluation of reactor cores and associated reactor plant heavy equipment and control drive mechanisms for all naval prototypes and naval nuclear propulsion plants.

There is no substitution for education at the EN-5 level.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ENGINEER:
- Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Engineering OR
- Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate professional field, provided you have had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. OR
- Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum. OR
- Current registration as a Professional Engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico allows eligibility only if your registration is within or closely related to nuclear engineering.
