This position is part of the Office of Enterprise Assessments, Department of Energy. As a Physical Scientist, you will serve as a senior scientific authority in the nuclear Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) topical area and lead teams of DOE and contractor technical experts on a regular and reoccurring basis in the conduct of appraisals, assessments, and special technical analyses and studies at DOE's nuclear and non-nuclear facilities and laboratories.

  • Obtain and maintain a Q security clearance. Failure to obtain and maintain the required security clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Incumbent is required to submit a Financial Disclosure Statement, OGE-450, Executive Branch Personnel Confidential Financial Disclosure Report upon entering the position and annually (5CFR Part 2634, Subpart I USOGE, 6/08).
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
  • Travel up to 30% of the time required.
  • This position is not included in a Bargaining Agreement.
  • This position is included in the Department of Energy's Technical Qualification Program (TQP) incumbent is responsible to meet program requirements within 12 to 18 months from the date of placement in the position.

Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement Physical Scientist: A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors (physical science, engineering, or mathematics) shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the above education requirement, the candidate must also possess the experience below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-14) in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: Providing guidance and advice to an interdisciplinary team on nuclear material controls and accountability. Conducting appraisals, assessments, technical analyses, or studies to evaluate current nuclear safeguards and security programs. Applying policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure protection of nuclear materials. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
