About the Position: This is a Maintenance Worker, WG-4749-08 position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Southwestern Division (SWD), Fort Worth District, Operations Division. This is a permanent and full-time position and is located in Wylie, TX.

Duties

Maintain and repair park facilities such as campsites, picnic areas, public restrooms, and park roads. Make basic repairs of electrical wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures in project intake structures, outlet works, and dams, gauging stations, office and maintenance buildings, recreational facilities, and other associated electrical systems. Perform basic carpentry work associated with maintaining operations buildings and public access areas. Maintain, repair, modify for accessibility, and occasionally construct structures of concrete, block, and occasionally brick or other related materials. Assists in installing, modifying, and repairing existing and new utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water and oil distribution systems, water closets, tubs, and showers. Locate roof leaks and determine cause and extent of damage. Use scrapers, wire brushes, putty knives, sandpaper, and chemicals to prepare surfaces for painting. Perform basic repairs, preventive, cyclical, and predictive maintenance on flood risk management features using established maintenance/job plans. Monitor river and/or lake stages at flood control project. Operate equipment such as: front-end loader, bulldozer, pick-up truck, dump truck, skid steer and all-terrain vehicle (ATV), tractor equipped with a backhoe, forklift, overhead crane, motorboat less than 16 feet and pontoon barge less than 26 feet. Performs basic electric arc and resistance and oxyacetylene welding of various pieces of equipment and miscellaneous metal items, such as but not limited to machinery guards, snow blades, booms, barricades, trash racks, and handrails.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires that you undergo Urinalysis Testing prior to entering the position and random drug testing thereafter.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain all Corps of Engineers licenses associated with this position. The Government has a Licensing Program which includes but is not limited to Dump Truck, Truck and Trailer, Crane, Forklift, and Construction Equipment.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's license (CDL).
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires you to wear a prescribed uniform while in a duty status.

Duties include but are not limited to climbing ladders and steep stairways, and working on steep and uneven ground. Incumbent must be capable of lifting at least 50 pounds unassisted or up to 100 pounds with the assistance of one other person. Tasks requiring the ability to lift 50 pounds while working alone include but are not limited to lifting and carrying a five gallon can of kerosene, lifting and carrying a 50 pound bag of wildlife seed, lifting and carrying a 5 gallon can of paint, cleaning liquid or hydraulic oil. Tasks requiring the ability to lift up to 100 pounds with the assistance of one other person include but are not limited to moving furniture and lifting 80 pound bags of cement. Working ConditionsIncumbent works in a variety of conditions. Work is completed on but not limited to scaffolding, high ladders or rooftops subject to dangers such as but not limited to falling, exposed to possibility of burns, cuts and bruises, broken bones or infections. Incumbent may work in inclement weather to perform duties including but not limited to surveillance of project, various inspections, boundary marking, special events, and emergency situations (respond to public accidents, drowning incidents, etc.). Incumbent must be capable or working in conditions of dust, welding fumes, paint vapors and sandblast particles utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment for those conditions which may be heavy and uncomfortable.
