About the Position: This position is located within the Directorate of Surgery Audiology & Speech Pathology Department at Defense Health Agency, Defense Health Network Pacific Rim, Naval Medical Center San Diego CA.
The work involves assessing, diagnosing, treating and helping to prevent disorders related to speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing, and fluency.

Duties
Independently performs the full range of Speech-Language Pathology activities for the care of inpatients and outpatient presenting with the most difficult and complex communication disorders.
Assesses and treats a wide range of patient populations in speech-language pathology.
Plans, conducts, and carries out assessment, differential diagnosis, and intervention processes.
Serves as a member of one or more multidisciplinary teams to ensure patients with multiple and complex impairments receive the required coordinated care.
Utilizes patient records, performance, and family interviews to contribute essential data in the diagnostic process and appropriate patient care.
Demonstrates competence in the operation and maintenance of diverse and specialized speech-language pathology equipment and supplies.
Attending and presenting at recurring academic lectures/clinical rounds presented by the Speech Pathology Division.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- This is designated as a Drug Testing Position. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- This position requires the completion of an Occupational Health pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 30lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete and maintain credentialing and privileging requirements in accordance with DHA Procedures Manual 6025.13, Volume 4.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
- This position requires a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice Speech/Language Pathology as applicable in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
- This position has an education requirement. You must provide official transcripts for graduate or higher level that included 18 semester hours in the field of Speech/Language Pathologist.
- This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Basic Requirements for Speech/ Language Pathologist:
Education: Successful completion of a graduate or higher-level degree that included 18 semester hours in the field of speech pathology with approved clinical practice. The education program must have been approved, recognized, or accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) at the time the degree was obtained.
License: This position requires a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice Speech Language Pathology in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) delivering speech therapy services and; 2) formulating treatment plans for speech disorders and; 3) speech therapy counseling patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone-no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
