About the Position: You will perform as a Maintenance Mechanic at lake projects primarily involving operation and maintenance of flood control facilities with limited maintenance of recreational sites or other facilities. Plans, assigns work, leads by active participation, and reviews a wide variety of maintenance, repair, and operational tasks.

Duties

Plan day-to-day work requirements, ensures adequate supplies, material, equipment, and tools are on hand prior to the start of each job. Diagnose problems in a variety of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and plumbing equipment/systems of varying complexities and determines corrective measures. Monitor river and/or lake stages at flood control project. Develop sketches or schematics of projected minor construction projects with work estimate of supplies, materials, and manpower requirements to allow for completion. Lead tours of dam and intake structures. Develop or participates in the development of contract requirements and specifications for indefinite quantity, maintenance, or one-time/job order contract (JOC), projects. Conduct inspection of flood control operating facilities, dam, and appurtenances to ensure proper operation and maintenance of dam embankment, hydraulic/stem/cable gates, cranes, pumps, motors, valves, switches, contacts, circuits and relays. Operate and maintain all electrical components, panels, and circuitry for a major public works flood control structure as well as associated office buildings and public use areas. Determine requirements for major repair of electrical facilities, conducts repair within project equipment and manpower capability or refers work to the assigned Project Electrician or considers for repair on a contract basis. Assign work according to workload requirements, grade levels, and individual capacity. Provide input for long ranger planning for projected maintenance requirements for new construction or modification of existing facilities. Develop sketches or schematics of projected minor construction projects with work estimate of supplies, materials, and manpower requirements to allow for completion. Perform maintenance support in a variety of trades such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, concrete/masonry, welding, roofing, painting, and labor and completes difficult and more complex tasks. Operate equipment to include motor vehicle equipment, front-end loader and bulldozer, tractor equipped with a backhoe, forklift, overhead crane, motorboat, and pontoon barge. Maintain equipment and structural records, prepares work orders, and utilizes computers and Corps-developed software.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, Condition of Employment, for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain all Corps of Engineers licenses associated with this position. The Government has a Licensing Program which includes but is not limited to, Truck and Trailer, Crane, Forklift, and Construction Equipment.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical. Where medical surveillance is required, incumbent must be able to pass all required physicals.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a current Corps of Engineers motorboat operator's license including all requirements of the District Licensing Policy.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid State motor vehicle operator's license prior to appointment.
  • Heavy physical lifting is required of this position. Incumbent must be able to lift objects weighing up to and including 50 pounds and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Incumbent must be able to perform all physical requirements of this position.

Incumbent must be capable of lifting at least 50 pounds unassisted or up to 100 lbs with assistance. Tasks requiring the ability to lift 50 pounds while working alone include but are not limited to lifting and carrying a five gallon can of kerosene, lifting and carrying a 50 pound bag of wildlife seed, lifting and carrying a 5 gallon can of paint, cleaning liquid or hydraulic oil. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a variety of conditions. May work in inclement weather to perform duties including but not limited to surveillance of project, various inspections, boundary marking, special events, and emergency situations (respond to public accidents, drowning). Works in conditions of dust, welding fumes, paint vapors and sandblast particles utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment for those conditions which may be heavy and uncomfortable.
