Duties

Select and mark timber for sale in areas, sometimes leading a small crew of less experienced technicians. Conduct timber cruises and provide data and estimates for various operations such as the quantity of timber stands, regeneration etc. Perform vegetation management through mechanical or chemical methods. Participate in fire management projects, including prescribed burning for the management of natural resources, and wildfire suppression.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the applicant and incumbent to pass an arduous physical fitness test, which includes a Pack Test (3 miles in 45 minutes with a 45-pound pack).
  • A Tier 1, Non-Sensitive, Low Risk background is required throughout this appointment.
  • Mandatory overtime is required for this position.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Forestry Technician, GS-0462-05 Specialized Experience: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes. 1. Assist with tree measurements and species identification for timber harvesting on tracks of land. 2. Learn to use timber cruising tools and techniques such as a compass, Geographic Positioning System (GPS), or aerial photos for assessing timber. 3. Assisting with wildland fire management practices to protect timber growth and production. OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university (you must attach a copy of your transcripts). OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. Forestry Technician GS-0462-06 Specialized Experience: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes. 1. Complete timber cruises to select and mark timber for harvest. 2. Conduct area surveys to evaluate tree volume and growth, disease, or stand condition. 3. Participate in wildland fire management activities, prescribed burning, wildlife suppression, and fire standby. OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Environmental Science (you must attach a copy of your transcripts). OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Fire ManagementForest ManagementTechnical Competence
