This position is located in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, in the Resource Stewardship and Science Division and can be duty located at either Gunnison or Montrose, CO. Serves as a cultural resources specialist for one or more parks where archeological resources comprise a major part of the park story. Duties

Performs or directs substantive, project-oriented work in the field of archeology from design through documentation to site monitoring. Makes significant contributions to the preparation of historic preservation documentation, compliance, and background materials for clearances, permits, licenses, compliance, plans, etc. Identifies, independently sorts, classifies, and analyzes archaeological artifacts. Uses remote sensing and GIS/GPS-based field equipment and software to identify, record, monitor, and assess the condition of archeological and other cultural resources. Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time. Work Environment: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, fire lines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters is possible. Park Information: The duty station for this position is the South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, located 15 miles east of Montrose, Colorado or at Curecanti National Recreation Area, located 15 miles west of Gunnison, Colorado. Montrose has a population of approximately 21,000 and regionally serves a population of 60,000. Gunnison has a population near 7,000. Most grocery, shopping, entertainment, and medical services can be found at either location. Black Canyon features a rugged landscape, premiering a deep and narrow canyon. Curecanti offers world renown fishing opportunities and a wide variety of recreational opportunities. The parks are home to a rich variety of plants and wildlife, including black bear, mule deer, elk, and big horn sheep. The parks are surrounded by BLM and USFS lands, where limitless recreational opportunities are readily available including hiking, camping, fishing, river running, mountain biking, and exploring natural landscapes. Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's Federal General Schedule Qualification Standards. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/31/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. Basic Requirement: GS-0193-11: A. Education 1. Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology. Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa. Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development. Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques. Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. AND Six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND Archeological field school (must be on transcript - typically 6 units) 2. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school - must be on transcript - typically 6 units). OR B. Combination of Education and Experience College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. OR C. Experience Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-0193-11: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as the majority of the following: one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience for this position includes the following: Planned field work for archeological and historical sites; Assisted in the development of compliance policy and procedures for cultural resources preservation and tribal consultation; Provided archaeology and cultural resources technical assistance, guidance and training to various personnel; Conducted archeological investigations at proposed project sites to assure archeological and historical resources are identified and proper preservation procedures are followed. OR Have 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (coursework directly related to position being filled). NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education. OR Successfully completed an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.). To combine education and experience, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of completed graduate education beyond the first year by 18 (or 27 for quarter hours). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
