About the position: The position is located at the golf course within the Services Squadron. The primary function of the position is to perform heavy laboring tasks, which require significant manual skill and very heavy physical effort to operate equipment necessary to maintain golf course grounds.

Duties

The incumbent performs significant labor involved with golf course grounds maintenance. Operates heavy, complex riding lawn mowers and similar types of specialized mowing equipment (e.g., multiple and independently-controlled cutting decks, single function components) and/or specially designed riding mowers that operate on slopes and require constant attention to working space and environment. Operates various controls and levers to maneuver equipment and lift, lower, adjust, engage, and disengage components or attached devices when working around: trees, greens, aprons, tees, fence lines, banks and hillsides, cart paths, sand bunkers, tee markers and cups on greens, trenches, slopes, curbs, rocks and other visible obstacles. Determines and selects the most appropriate type of equipment to accomplish each phase of the work in the most productive and cost-effective manner. Completes all aspects of special assignments involving several steps, phases or detailed procedures (e.g., preparing ground, laying sod, planting flowers or shrubs and using simple drawings to establish a planting pattern and/or design). The laborer installs forms and lays walks and paths using gravel and asphalt mixes; excavates and backfills ditches and trenches with hand tools; repairs and replaces pipe on irrigation systems; and may be asked to operate mowers, dump trucks or other equipment. Qualifying Experience: Knowledge to operate and control large, complex riding mowers and similar types of specialized mowing equipment. Skill in operating various controls and levers to maneuver equipment and lift, lower, adjust, engage and disengage components or attached devices which are designed to support the function of the equipment and required minimal mechanical knowledge to attach and operate. Skill to maneuver equipment in areas that require constant attention to working space and environment (e.g., equipment height and width when working around trees, trenches, large potholes, slopes, curbs, rocks and other visible obstacles). Ability to apply a practical knowledge of project requirements to accomplish all aspects of special assignments involving several steps, phases or detailed procedures (e.g., preparing ground, laying sod, planting flowers or shrubs and using simple drawings to establish a planting pattern and/or design).
