This position is with the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), within the Directorate of Technical Support and Emergency Management (DTSEM), in the OSHA Technical Center, located in Sandy, UT.
This position is at the full performance level.
This position is inside the bargaining unit.
Selectee will be expected to report to the office listed above. Current DOL policy requires on-site work at least 5 days per pay period.
Duties
The duties for the GS-1320-12 Chemist position include, but are not limited to the following:
Performs complex and unusual technical and analytical assignments requiring critical thinking and the ability to modify established procedure.
Interprets and evaluates analytical results in order to determine their significance to establish regulatory standards.
Establishes sampling and analytical method validity for new or non-routine monitoring procedures used in field investigation.
Provides on-demand communication with compliance field inspectors including technical assistance on analytical and sampling problems and non-routine or unanticipated circumstances.
Provides technical guidance in area(s) of expertise to other analysts, technicians and compliance officers, advising and assisting them via phone calls or email communication.
Requirements

- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
- Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
Qualifications
The Chemistry series (1320) has an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR). To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the Basic Requirement and the Specialized Experience to qualify.
IOR:
Basic Requirements:
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
Qualifying specialized experience for the GS 12 includes:
Advanced knowledge of industrial hygiene sampling and analysis for substances to which workers may be exposed.
Knowledge of and experience developing methods to be used for the collection of industrial hygiene samples.
Knowledge and/or experience with OSHA chemical exposure standards.
Demonstrated ability to successfully work with others in completing complex projects.
Demonstrated ability to follow laboratory policies and procedures.
For the GS-12: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-11 in the Federal Service.
