This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is a temporary position not to exceed one year and may be extended in one year increments up to a maximum of three years.

Duties

Assist the Small Craft Operator with navigation duties as prescribed in the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Rules. Assist with terrestrial and electronic navigation. Assist with passenger safety supervision. Utilize tools and equipment to include grapnel hook, boat hook or net to remove floating debris and hazards to navigation from waterways. Prepare vessels for mission by inspecting plant fluids, machinery, and lifesaving equipment. Perform routine manual laboring duties such as preparing surfaces to be painted by chipping, scaling, and removing old pain.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Deckhand without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties of a Deckhand which includes performing a variety of work involved in the maintenance and repair of the deck and general housekeeping on floating plant vessels. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Efforts: Moderate to heavy lifting is typically required (up to 40 pounds). Must be able to stand, bend, and climb in all sea conditions and to work in close quarters. Working Conditions: Works on and around decks and machinery. Incumbent is subject to injury while working around machinery, falls on wet decks, exposure to weather and temperature conditions at the Canal.
