This position is located in Agricultural Research Service in the Characterization & Interventions for Foodborne Pathogens Research Unit in Wyndmoor, PA. In this position you will work in coordination with other scientist performing a wide range of duties designed to solve complex biological/agricultural problems in support of research projects.

Duties

Works as a team member to provide bioinformatics research in support of unit scientists and serves as a resource for the data services/systems. Conducts complex bioinformatics and other computational analysis. Provides input to senior leadership in designing, implementing, managing, and evaluating large, complex analytical applications, projects and studies. Serves as advisor for projects and provides computational, bioinformatics, statistical analysis techniques, big data procedures, data mining activities. Performs required investigations, designs appropriate experimental and analytical approaches, executes, organizes, and evaluates research results, and contributes to reports on findings.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Basic Requirements: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND In addition to meeting the basic education requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualification requirements: GS-12: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience performing bioinformatics or statistical data support for genomics or transcriptomics initiatives; analyzing genomics or transcriptomics research data to support biological or agricultural research projects; and using genomic or bioinformatics tools or computer software to perform bioinformatics analysis. GS-13 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience developing new computational methods or algorithms to support genomics or transcriptomics research; using computer software or tools to perform bioinformatics analyses; providing trainings, guidance or troubleshooting on scientific computer systems or programs needed for bioinformatics research; and documenting research results for inclusion in scientific journals or technical reports. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
