This position is located at the Sheridan VA Medical Center in Sheridan, WY. The work involves the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of masonry structures of brick, block, stone, firebrick, and similar material.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Maintaining, repairing, altering, and constructing exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block, and stone
Planning and laying out work, selecting the proper tools, and determining materials to be used
Laying common and face brick, firebrick, cinder and cement block, glass block, terra cotta, and various artificial and natural stone in constructing, and repairing, walls, walks, manholes, boilers, and catch basins
Constructing window sills, lintels, and arches capable of supporting walls above the openings
Cutting, shaping, and finishing stone
Performing other related duties as assigned
Mason reviews work to be performed, interprets blueprints or sketches, and decides work methods or processes best suited to complete the work.
The position requires operation of a motor vehicle to perform assigned duties.
Most have a current, valid state-issued Driver's License is required for this position

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Preferred Experience: Constructs, repairs, alters exterior/interior surfaces and structures. Frames and places concrete for sidewalks, roadways and other concrete applications. Lays common and face brick, firebrick, cinder and cement block, glass block, or terra cotta in constructing/repairing walls, walks, chimneys, or fireplaces.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The employee is frequently required to perform heavy lifting up to 90 pounds in carrying bricks, block, stone, mortar, cement, and sand. The employee is required to continually stand while working and must frequently climb ladders and scaffolds. The employee is exposed to a variety of weather conditions while outdoors. The employee is subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds. There is exposure to dust and dirt while mixing mortar and while handling various masonry materials.
