The Pipefitter works under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Mechanic Work Leader and is responsible for the coordination, scheduling, and completion of all work assigned. and ensures that all assignments are completed in a timely manner. They maintain records specifically on all FMS equipment and systems work performed, and assists the Structural Supervisor on the evaluation of all assigned and completed work tasks at the James A Haley Veterans Hospital.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Repairing plumbing systems and related equipment. Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utilities, supply and disposal systems. Working from building plans, blueprints, sketches, and verbal instruction to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation or systems and equipment. Testing and making needed adjustments to systems and equipment for proper operation, flow, drainage, and sanitary conditions in accordance with VA and national Plumbing Codes. Installing, modifying, and repairing systems by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper operation systems. Repairing systems and equipment such as sewage water, oil, and Medical Gas distribution systems as well as water closets, tubs, fire sprinklers systems, and showers. Installing, repairing, assembling, or replacing gauges, steam traps, thermostatic controls, unit heaters, toilets, urinals lavatories, sinks, tubs, physiotherapy equipment, showers, dishwashing machines, control valves, hot water generators, stills, autoclaves and sterilizers, expansion joints, and heat exchangers. Cutting, threading, and installing pipe including: black iron, ductile, galvanized, lead, wrought iron malleable, copper, brass, plastic, and glass pipe. Able to weld, braze, solder, silver solder black iron, copper, brass, and stainless steel pipe. Responsible for developing as built drawings upon completion of any system modification with regard to design changes and submitting them for proper inclusion in the facility's permanent blueprints. Performing preventative maintenance on systems by clearing stoppages, checking piping, fittings and fixtures for defects and by making necessary repairs. Installing, modifying, repairing, and maintaining high temperature water and high-pressure piping systems such as hydraulic, nitrogen, oxygen, steam-heating, and steam-generating systems. Setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, installing regulating devices, and placing hangers for proper pitch and elevation. Fitting pipe sections by screwing, bolting, brazing, welding, gluing, fusing, soldering, and caulking connections by forcing oakum and molten lead into joints. Tracing and troubleshooting pipes, lines, systems, and equipment to locate and repair leaks and trouble spots. Performing safety and preventative maintenance inspections of systems and equipment. Working at the journeyman level and all repairs, modifications, and installations will be neat, plumb, level or sloped in accordance with trade practices. Adhering to the rules and regulations applicable to the trade, complies with Building and Plumbing Codes and hospital policies. Reviewing blueprints, sketches, drawings, etc. for compliance with local and national codes and proper trade practices and procedures. Will make rough sketches or prints of newly installed or modified equipment or systems to be delivered to the plumbing work leader for the purpose of updating the master piping and plumbing blueprints. Figuring pressures in the systems and seeing that the piping, valves, fittings, and equipment are proper for work. Constructing dust barriers and/or blocks off areas as needed for the safety and protection of patients, staff, visitors, and equipment. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD00108A Physical Requirements: Incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Frequently stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently handles, lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries items that weigh over 50 pounds with help. Incumbent will work within the medical facility's operating functions and must use all appropriate safety tools and clothing, etc. to protect self, other staff, visitors, and patients. Other assignments can be in remote areas such as sub-basement, machinery rooms, rooftops, roads, and walkways. Work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy and may contain asbestos or in areas where bad smelling fumes are present which may require respirator and will include working with flammable and toxic liquids. Outside work will entail exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
