The incumbent, under the supervision of the Chief of Respiratory Care Services displays proficiency and performs at a level of excellence in all Sleep Diagnostic procedures and other related procedures in accordance with the guidelines established by the American Sleep Disorders Association, American Academy of Sleep Disorders and policies and procedures of Madison VA Hospital.
Duties
Duties may include, but not limited to:
Patient assessment related to sleep disorders
Patient instruction and education
Patient setup, calibration and acquisition performance verification
Monitoring of multiple physiological data throughout the test
Troubleshooting of polysomnographic recording equipment
Perform pre and post-test calibrations
Identify and treat sleep related breathing disorders
Recognize the need for medical intervention if patient safety is at risk
Remove, and clean re-usable electrodes and sensors at completion of study
The staging of the sleep studies
Document all data in CPRS including for scoring
The Scoring of Sleep Studies
Demonstrates knowledge and level of expertise required to perform Sleep Diagnostic procedures
Monitors and evaluates patient performance during sleep procedures and evaluates' response to therapy and recommends changes based on information obtained
Demonstrates proficiency in all sleep procedures performed (education, acquisition, scoring)
Correctly applies established protocols for consistent, accurate and reliable scored sleep study
Downloading and scoring home sleep studies.
They must be reliable, able to work independently, flexible with scheduling and be self-motivated. The Polysomnographer is responsible for performing job duties in accordance with mission, vision, and values of Hines VA Hospital.

Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation.
Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).Grade Determinations:GS-08Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided a knowledge of the more complex procedures as well as knowledge of the uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1. Advanced knowledge or the International Classification of Sleep Disorders and the ability to recognize uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. 2. Ability to summarize and report polysomnographic data in narrative form. 3. Knowledge of event characteristics (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, sleep stage, seizures, etc.) and ability to take appropriate action. 4. Ability to provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians. Certification. RPSGT or AASM sleep certificate.
A Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) with current certification.
Maintains a current CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) card.
Maintains current proficiency and competency standards for hospital and service.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS8.
Preferred Experience: Registered polysomnographic technologist, Certified Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
