Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing administrative and analytical support for the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), District of West Virginia. Typical work assignments will include: Provides technical assistance to litigation teams on legal automation requirements and systems capabilities to facilitate litigation decisions, trial preparation and trial presentation. Applies a basic knowledge of Federal Criminal and Civil procedures, court requirements. and district practices to implement computer applications needed for criminal and civil cases. Performing a wide range of information system analysis, development, and installation in support of District litigation support activities for assigned cases. Working with IT staff in diagnosing and resolving litigation support computer system problems and customizing databases and programs modified to meet individual users needs. Using knowledge of a variety of legal regulations, precedents and practices, examines, prepares and processes technical legal correspondence and documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in format. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualifications

GS-09: To be eligible at the GS-09 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education OR a combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing the following types of duties: performing routine litigation support assignments such as assisting with organizing case information (i.e., scanning and creating CDs); assisting attorneys in preparing for court such as preparing exhibits, compiling trial notebooks, compiling witness and exhibit lists and preparing computerized trial presentations and exhibits; conducting research, analysis and evaluation of data in response to requests; using automated legal research tools such as Westlaw, Lexis, as well as public information databases to perform basic research of case-specific legal matters; and preparing a variety of legal documents. OR Education: Master's Degree or equivalent graduate degree in a related field (e.g., Legal Studies, Law, Criminal Justice); or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D., if related. My education was obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year.
