Duties
Receives fire reports, determines location, land status, and current fire information, and dispatches personnel, equipment, aircraft, and/or supplies according to predefined plans or in response to resource orders from the field.
Collects, processes, collates and submits incident information to support fire operations.
Maintains resource status and tracking systems and operates telecommunication systems.
Inputs data into a number of fire related computer applications.
Monitors all fire radio communications and maintains logs on all telephone and radio conversations that transpire.
Requirements

- Applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use and to pass the test prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
Qualifications

At the GS-04 Level: Six (6) months of specialized experience, equivalent to at least GS-03 in the federal service AND 6 months of general experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position. Examples of specialized work experience include but are not limited to: performing dispatching work or experience that provided you with a familiarity with the subject matter and/or processes of dispatching, such as: performing wildland fire suppression duties and working with fire/dispatch computer programs; OR two (2) years of study above high school that included 12 semester hours in courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable; OR an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.
At the GS-05 Level: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-04 in the federal service. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: performing dispatching work or experience that provided you with a familiarity with the subject matter and/or processes of dispatching, such as: performing wildland fire suppression duties; operating fire/incident related telecommunications equipment and other related equipment; and assisting with tracking fire resources; OR completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-4. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable; OR an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.
This is a SECONDARY/Administrative fire position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). While secondary positions are not subject to the maximum entry age (MEA) policy, the selectee must have prior service in a primary position and meet the transfer requirement for movement from a primary to secondary position to be eligible for special retirement coverage. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure this office has enough information to determine your retirement status to ensure you do not lose benefits (normally through submission of your SF-50). YOU MUST LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY IN A PRIMARY POSITION.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work involves long hour of sitting, intense concentration, and working at peak proficiency/intensity levels with irregular breaks and mealtimes. Must be able to cope with the pressure of meeting timeframes and changing priorities. Mental concentration and accuracy are required.
Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in an office setting. During peak activity long hours, increased radio traffic, numerous ringing phones, and conversations result in high noise levels, which require as high level of concentration to perform duties. Duties of this position create a highly stressful work environment.

This position falls under the Forestry Technician Series, 0462. There are Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for this job series.
This position allows for education to be substituted for specialized experience (see qualification section for education requirements). If using education to qualify - You MUST submit a copy of ALL your college transcripts or a list of ALL college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university. Upon selection, official transcripts must be received prior to appointment. If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
