The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), Veterans' Employment & Training Service (VETS) is accepting applications for Summer 2025 Student Volunteers. VETS prepares America's veterans, service members, and military spouses for meaningful careers, provides them with employment resources and expertise, protects their employment rights, and promotes their employment opportunities.

Duties

In order to be eligible for this opportunity you must be able to obtain academic credit from your institution OR a third-party stipend of at least $15.00 per hour or higher if the locality you are selected for has a higher minimum wage than $15.00. Assignments can include the following: assist in basic research; qualitative and quantitative research; preparing briefing papers, and/or position papers; assist in the preparation of management reports; assist in the preparation of risk assessments, track and document changes, and/or collect and analyze data; Creating tables and graphs to present research findings; Writing and administering online surveys; Writing reports of research findings and all other duties assigned. These assignments will assist VETS in accomplishing their priorities of: 1. Getting the military to civilian employment transition right. 2. Leveraging partnerships to maximize employment outcomes. 3. Promoting and advancing equity, inclusion and accessibility for underserved communities.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years old and eligible to work in the United States of America (USA).
  • Must be actively enrolled or accepted for enrollment at least half-time at a qualifying educational institution at the time of selection and must maintain such enrollment throughout the duration of this program.
  • Must be in good academic standing as defined by the agency as 2.0 GPA or higher.
  • For minors aged 16 or 17: If selected for a student volunteer position, you must also submit a work permit prior to coming onboard.
  • In order to be eligible for this opportunity you must be able to obtain academic credit from your institution OR a third-party stipend of at least $15.00 per hour or higher if the locality you are selected for has a higher minimum wage than $15.00.
  • Non-resident candidates must have three years of residency in the United States to meet the residency requirement for background investigations.

Qualifications

Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) is preferred. Ability to manage multiple assignments, projects and/or initiatives. Ability to analyze data and information. Ability to communicate with others and make presentations. An interest in public administration, public policy or public service. Ability to work effectively in an in-office, telework, or combination of both (hybrid) work setting (if applicable). Ability to work well in a team environment. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to organize a variety of assignments simultaneously to meet deadlines.

Education

To be eligible for this unpaid student volunteer opportunity, you must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution, for the purpose of obtaining a diploma, degree, or certificate. Current students must have a grade-point average of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. If selected, you must maintain a 2.0 or higher-grade point average on a 4.0 scale throughout the duration of the program. You must submit with your application a current academic transcript and/or other official documentation from your academic institution demonstrating your eligibility for selection.

If you do not submit sufficient academic documentation necessary to demonstrate that you meet the eligibility described in this announcement, your application will be deemed incomplete, and you will be ineligible for further consideration for this vacancy.

An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university and vocational or technical institution.

If the student is not currently enrolled or is between academic programs, the student may have a brief interim period of not more than five months during which the student must demonstrate a bona fide intention of continuing to pursue a course of study immediately after the interim period has ended. This documentation may be provided through an official letter from the academic institution confirming the student's status as a continuing student, or similar documentation.

Graduating seniors from high school, college or graduate school who are not continuing their education will not be considered eligible.
