The position is located in the Office of Patient Safety and Clinical Quality (OPSCQ), at the Clinical Center (CC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Duties

As a GS-0601-13 Patient Representative, your duties may include but are not limited to the following: The Patient Representative provides guidance to patients and staff in the management of complicated healthcare scenarios common to patients at the NIH Clinical Center, and sufficient to understand the nursing needs, medical care needs, practical social needs, and psychosocial implications on the patient's ability to communicate and to have a meaningful discussion and input into their wishes. Coordinates with investigators, institutions, organizations, and other patient care agencies engaged in assigned patient research activities and related fields and aids prospective researchers and patient coordinators on various mechanisms and advocate review processes. Plans and executes analytic research projects and researches the quality of methodologies and measures pertinent to the assessment and summarization of the health status of patients. Monitors public health policies, patient regulations, and cooperative agreements with full responsibility for carrying out all required monitoring and management duties. Informs an orients new patients to the mission of the NIH and CC and the rights and obligations of research subjects; provides information about services and interprets CC policies and procedures for patients and staff. The incumbent reviews and assesses patient orientation forms and publications for accuracy, relevancy, and coverage. Maintains a weekday log of the OR/ICU family waiting area with detailed accounts of significant events. Maintains close relationships with organizations and agencies involved with patient representative activities to ensure that the CC Patient Representative Program stays at or near "state-of-the-art" and to share the insight obtained from the CC with the outside organizations.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.

Qualifications

Education Qualification Requirement for GS-13: In order to qualify for a Patient Representative-GS-601, position you must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a Bachelor's degree or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained). Additional Qualification Requirement for GS-13: In addition, in order to qualify for a Patient Representative-GS-601, at the GS-13 level, you must have at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: providing optimal hospital response to patient/ family concerns; interpreting patient medical records and case findings to address patient concerns and problems; serving as a liaison for the organization, patient, and their families; developing external and internal written communications for the organization; interpreting regulations regarding the Privacy Act, the Freedom of Information Act, and healthcare consumer advocacy to ensure compliance.
