Duties

The Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System is seeking an outstanding Endocrinology Section Chief located within Medicine Service Line. This is a full-time position, which includes a mix of clinical care, teaching, research, and administration. The Section Chief of Endocrine should be Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism with strong academic and research credentials, solid leadership and administrative experience and extensive experience in treatment of thyroid disorders and development of related research. The incumbent is expected to be able to perform and oversee the teaching of all of the services required by an Endocrinologist and Endocrine Section Chief. The duties and responsibilities include but not limited to the following: Oversee the day-to-day clinical operations of the Endocrinology Section. Ensure that high quality patient care is delivered in a resourceful and efficient manner. Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with diabetes and other endocrine disorders in the outpatient and inpatient setting. Manage a thyroid ultrasound and biopsy program, teach, and perform the technique of thyroid ultrasound and fine needle aspiration biopsies of thyroid nodules. Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and treatment of disease. High quality teaching and supervision of trainees at all levels from medical student to fellow. Oversee the administrative functions of the Endocrinology section which include but are not limited to: evaluating and implementing new technologies; oversight of the quality improvement program; identify and address performance deficiencies, implement corrective action plans; recommend improvement of work methods, organizational features, and staffing needs, prepare and justify Section business plan, facilitate the recruitment, selection, appraisal, and recognition of employees; direct the patient care with the Endocrinology section, ensure appropriate coverage for patients. Oversee the residency/fellowship program as the VA Endocrinology Fellowship Program Site Director, assuring compliance with ACGME standards. Assist the Medicine Service Chief in the areas of: Resource Utilization; Accomplishment of local, VISN and national goals; Safety. Provide shared coverage of endocrine care during off-tours. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00a.m. to 4:30p.m. Rotating call on nights, weekends and holidays. Occasional telework may be approved at the discretion of the supervisor.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Endocrinology Board Certification Preferred Experience: Board Certification and/or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine. Experience in managing a thyroid ultrasound and biopsy program, teaching and performing the technique of thyroid ultrasound and fine needle aspiration biopsies of thyroid nodules. Minimum eight years of experience working as a clinical endocrinologist in both outpatient and inpatient settings and with an emphasis on diagnosis and management of complex thyroid cancer. Minimum four years of experience as a collaborating physician for advanced nurse practitioners. Minimum four years of leadership experience in an Endocrinology Fellowship as a Program Director demonstrating success in designing and teaching a core curriculum for fellows in Endocrinology. Minimum two years of leadership experience in an Endocrinology Section as a Chief demonstrating success in staff recruitment and retention, increased Veterans access to patient care, and implementation of corrective action plans to address section deficiencies. Experience leading Quality improvement projects and clinical trials as Principal Investigator. Experience in successful grant applications aiming to improve Veteran's health documented by obtaining funding. Expertise in Implementation, Clinical and Translational Science. Master's Degree in Clinical and Translational Science. Experience as a Site Director for endocrinology fellowship and Chief of Endocrinology Section at a VA Medical Center. Active research program and experience in clinical investigation of thyroid disorders documented by authorship of at least twenty-five peer reviewed publications. Education

1. Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
2. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
3. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
