Duties

The incumbent will primarily work the front desk in the visitor center collecting fees, dispensing information and guidance to visitors, and dealing with customer service issues. Good customer service skills are required as well as a friendly and helpful demeanor. The incumbent will also see to back-office work remitting fees collected, filing reports, and other paperwork as needed. This is a uniformed position. Experience needed in money handling, light accounting, and ability to pass a background investigation. This position is an entry level federal government position that can lead directly to bigger and better things. With this job you will obtain permanent government employee status that can be used to find and apply for any other job opening within the federal government. Physical Demands: The work is mostly sedentary requiring, at times, long hours of sitting, thinking, and writing. Also, requires walking, standing, bending, and carrying moderately heavy (up to 30 pounds) boxes of maps, brochures, remittance paperwork, etc. Immense time is spent on the computer and money counting, which is major optic eye use (strain). The incumbent must operate a motor vehicle. Incumbent may work in entrance stations, or other operations that will require working in temperatures near freezing to 100 degrees in sun rain, wind, or other inclement weather. Mental stress and physical fatigue could occur due to high volume and responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money. Working Conditions: Work environment is normally performed in an office setting that is monitored by a video surveillance system that is always on, and taping area is occupied. Work in this office can, at times become very isolated. The incumbent must operate motor vehicles in all weather conditions, rain, or shine. The work is performed at various hours of the day and night and for prolonged periods during emergency situations. Area Information: Capulin Volcano Natl. Monument is located in a beautiful but isolated part of ne New Mexico appr. 35 miles east of Raton, NM, & 55 miles west of Clayton, NM. Elevations range from 7242 to 8200 ft. Minimal services are available near Capulin Volcano in the villages of Des Moines, Capulin, & Folsom. Raton NM (pop. 6537), Trinidad CO (pop. 8,080), & Clayton NM (pop. 2874) are the largest cities nearby & have medical services, housing, & shopping. Housing tends to be inexpensive & easy to find locally, but not much info for apartments etc. is available online. Capulin Volcano erupted between 56,000 and 62,000 years ago. Capulin's conical form rises more than 1,300 ft. above surrounding High Plains. Although Capulin is primarily known for its volcanic geology, the park boasts a rich diversity of plant & animal life. The arid grasslands of the Great Plains & the forests of the Rocky Mountains combine at Capulin to form a unique ecotone, which provides habitat for 73 species of birds in addition to numerous other animals. Capulin Volcano is also an International Dark Sky Park & is the gateway to camping/hiking opportunities in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level on all competencies. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/15/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year (12 months) of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience include: collecting and accounting for monies and accountable stock using a cash register or point of sale system; verifying transaction records, including money collected and accountable stock sold, against complete shift reports; and identifying and troubleshooting accounting errors or problems. You must provide hours per week worked in your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating degree earned and credit hours in order to qualify based on education. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. For example, 6 months of the specialized experience described in A above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (75% of the qualifying education) as specified in B above, equals greater than 100% of the total requirement. You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating number of credit hours in order to qualify based on the combination option. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
