This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for STEM Positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is located in Fort Novosel, AL, home of the US Army Aviation Center of Excellence, withing the Wiregrass area of Southeast Alabama. Fort Novosel offers an abundance of recreational family activities and is a short drive to some of Florida's most popular beaches.

Duties

Serves as senior Forestry Technician; plans and conducts phases of a diverse Forestry program. Collects data on specific phases of work, analyzes data resulting from inspection and survey findings, consolidates data into reports and makes recommendations concerning appropriate control measures and relative urgency or timing or control actions. Develops, plans, and conducts studies for the effective utilization of remotely sensed data and GIS in the overall management of field office programs. Collects and transcribes data form sources such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) photo mosaic maps, topographic maps, and other databases. Serves as work leader over a group of Forestry Technicians; distributes and balances workload, trains new employees, and checks work in progress or completed work.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Required to wear and/or use protective equipment to include safety boots in accordance with established health and safety regulation and SOPs as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to perform heavy lifting (45+ pounds) with assistance.
  • This position requires a physical Examination
  • Must be able to read and interpret aerial photographs and maps.
  • Must have valid driver's license.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1. Planning and coordinating a variety of forest management activities such as timber sales, timber cruising, timber marking; 2. Coordinating prescribed burning; 3. Forestry road construction; 4. Performing herbicide application; 5. Utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to interpret and analyze data and 6. Interpreting aerial photographs and maps. This definition of general experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Two years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Forestry. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
