The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of building 24499 and related grounds, structures, fixtures, utilities, HV AC, and systems furniture for the Air Force Inspection Agency. and the Air Force Safety Center. Also included are like tasks for building 48025 (Crash Lab) for the Air Force Safety Center.
Duties
Constructs, alters, and repairs wooden and wood-substitute items and structures, such as framework and interior/exterior, walls trim, from initial layout to final assembly.
Inspects, repairs, and performs maintenance on facility heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HV AC) systems. Familiar with and closes proper valves for emergency shutdown of the systems.
Performs all interior maintenance and repair of the facility plumbing systems to include leading faucets and other fixtures.
Performs grounds/landscaping duties such as leveling the ground with hand tools; pruning, treating, and removing trees; and other related tasks.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4700 Maintenance Mechanic. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a WG-4749 MAINTENANCE MECHANIC more than normal without supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
I. Knowledge of the standard methods of combustion, heat transfer principles, and fuel characteristics to install, repair, and maintain heating boilers and domestic heating units and systems and refrigeration principles, including the refrigeration cycle, temperature measurement, and the properties of several refrigerants.
2. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures and ability to read and apply work orders, blueprints, sketches, and other oral and written instructions.
3. Skill in performing routine maintenance on small electric motors, feed pumps, and valves, including replacing brushes, seals, bearings, and repacking valves; servicing power sources and replacing items such as belts, fans, and fuse; installing, aligning, adjusting, and repairing oil, gas, and coal burners and other burning mechanisms as well as heating boiler components; and making repairs on refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems, including replacing major portions of assigned systems.
4. Knowledge of carpentry methods and techniques, basic shop mathematics, and material strengths and applications to construct, install, repair, or modify wood structures.
5. Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, precision measuring devices, and a variety of test equipment. Skill in reading and applying work orders, blueprints, sketches, and other oral and written instructions.
6. Ability to learn basic electronics to locate faults in temperature controls and control devices, such as damper motors, mixing valves, and modulating motors; and use shop mathematics to compute fuel consumption rates, heat generating units, and air-to-fuel ratios and conversions.
Physical Effort
The employee lifts, carries, and handles equipment up to 50 pounds unassisted and over 50 pounds with assistance. Works from ladders, scaffolding platforms, or cramped areas where equipment, parts, or tools are hard to reach. Work requires frequent stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions for long periods. In addition, work involves frequent movement and maneuvering of large, heavy equipment using hoists, holders, and pulleys as required.
Work Conditions
The employee works indoors and outdoors, on elevated structures, and in cramped areas. Subject to discomfort from face masks or other protective devices when there is a possibility of exposure to chemicals, heat, steam, noise, noxious gases, fumes, or acids. Occasionally works outside, on top of buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Subject to possible bums, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. To reduce dangers from these and other similar conditions, follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard-toe shoes, respirators, hard hats, and fire retardant gloves.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
