You will serve as a DISTRICT FIRE CHIEF in the FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES (F&ES) Department of NAVSTA GREAT LAKES IL.
Duties
You will administer a fire protection and prevention training program (e.g., structural firefighting, aircraft crash and rescue response, fire prevention and emergency medical services, hazardous materials, etc) for a fire department.
You will collaborate with fire fighter personnel to ensure emergency responses (e.g., fire suppression, injured victims, hazardous spill cleanup) are assigned.
You will assign work to junior firefighters or employees based on priorities, requirements, and capabilities.
You will brief senior leaders or other employees on matters on firefighting actives, personnel, and equipment.
You will implement a risk management plan in accordance with fire and emergency regulations.
You will develop written information for media (e.g., bulletins, newspapers, special events or gatherings, workshops) to increase fire prevention awareness.

- This position requires the annual firefighter physical exam and respiratory protection testing on an annual basis. Requires ongoing skills competencies, testing and certifications for emergency medical care licensing.
- This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
- The incumbent is required to work a 56 hour work week with at least one 24 hour embedded shift.
- The incumbent may be subject to immediate recall. Assignments may be performed at any job site within the organization.
- Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an Emergency Vehicle Operator (EVOC) license.
Qualifications
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Monitors fire department programs such as breathing air systems, personal protective equipment, purchasing/credit card holder, health and safety, fire department accreditation, and EMS performance improvement; Assist with applying management objectives and goals for employees including performance objectives and appraisals, individual development planning, and command mission; 3) Communicating goals and objectives to subordinates; 4) Providing policy, regulation development, and technical writing for the installation; 5) Develop strategic planning (risk assessment, service delivery, etc.) to ensure operational readiness; and 6) Evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of fire protection, prevention, and emergency medical services delivery. ***This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications for the GS-12: Fire Officer III, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor II, Hazardous Material Incident-Commander Certification. The following certification is also required: Emergency Medical Technician and must have been awarded by the state or National Registry (if you do not have NREMT, you MUST obtain National Registry within 12 months from the date of hire). These fire certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or Pro Board to meet the requirement. If you do not possess all of the above certifications and you have not attached copies of your certifications, you will be rated ineligible.***
