This position is located at the Denver, CO VA Medical Center (DEN VAMC) Jewell Clinic in the Prosthetics Department. The primary purpose of the position is to support the clinical operations and administrative functions of the DEN VAMC Prosthetics Fabrication Lab by fabricating prosthetic and orthotic devices, assisting with equipment maintenance and ensuring that all work is performed following safety and compliance standards.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Fabricates, adjusts, and repairs common orthotic/prosthetic devices from casts and/or measurement documents; Uses a wide variety of materials and equipment necessary to fabricate with leather, metal, plastic, fabric, resins and composite components to orthotic and prosthetic devices, orthotic soft goods, shoes, and shoe inserts; Assesses technical requirements of orthotic and/or prosthetic devices; Formulates fabrication requirements within the treatment plan established by certified and/or privileged clinical staff; Uses approved fabrication techniques, safety guidelines, material/component usage, and design updates; Ensures that devices are fabricated in a safe, timely and efficient manner; Assists in ordering and maintaining raw materials/components inventory; Requests patient specific items through the most appropriate systems; Maintains a clean and safe working environment; Adheres to clinical practice management guidelines, policies, and procedures; Maintains appropriate records of components, machinery, and equipment; and Performs other related duties as assigned. TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-08 GRADE LEVEL, APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT: This position requires an eligible American Board for Certification (ABC) as a Certified Prosthetic-Orthotic Technician, Certified Orthotic Technician and/or Certified Prosthetic Technician. If selected and you do not have this certification, you must be able and willing to obtain certification within one year of hire. NOTE:If you are currently certified, you will be required to provide a copy of the certification(s) if referred for an interview. IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE ENGLISH LANGUANGE PROVICIENCY AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT, TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION, YOU MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. You must have one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to this (Health Technician - Prosthetics Technician) position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes assessing, fabricating, and repairing orthotic/prosthetic devices; utilizing tools, measuring devices, machines, and various materials related to fabrication of orthotic/prosthetic devices; reading and understanding work orders and orthotic/prosthetic procedures; and providing clinical and administrative support to an orthotics/prosthetics facility. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. ~OR~ EDUCATION: You must have successfully completed at least one and one-half years (27 semester hours) of graduate level education that is directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled (Health Technician - Prosthetics Technician). This education must have been obtained from an accredited college, university, school, or institution and must have provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~ COMBINATION: You must have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described above that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. NOTE:Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The position demands a moderate degree of exertion and a high degree of dexterity, long periods of standing and long-distance walking from clinic to clinic. The work requires some physical exertion, prolong periods of standing and working at a variety of machines, bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, and stretching to work on devices and appliances. There may be recurring lifting (not to exceed 50lbs) and moving of moderately heavy supplies and equipment such as wheelchairs and durable medical equipment. The position will also require the work of power tools and various machinery.
