About this position: This position is assigned to the Water Resources Division, Operations Branch at the Gathright Dam Project Office outside Covington, Virginia and conducts maintenance duties to include grounds maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, painting, and vehicle/vessel operation. This is a developmental position. You may be selected at the WG-5 or WG-7 grade level at management discretion. Full Performance Level is WG-07.

Duties

Serves as Maintenance Worker at the Gathright Dam. Operate and maintain a flood control dam by performing duties such as: regular maintenance of a dam and intake tower and making flood releases. Perform a variety of operational duties such as: inspections and repairs to project grounds and facilities. Operate a variety of vehicles and vessels such as pickup trucks, skid steer, lawn tractors, forklifts, and motorboats. Performs a variety of maintenance, repair and operational duties.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent is required to have a valid state driver's license.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a boat operators and a forklift operator's license within their first 12 months of employment.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
  • Incumbent is required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.).
  • May be required to have a valid CPR certificate and first responder (or equivalent) certificate.
  • May be required to work in both non-permit and permit required confined space and implement proper rescue and entry techniques.
  • Position requires a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Position requires a pre-employment drug test and random drug/alcohol tests thereafter.
  • May be required to be properly trained and/or operate the following equipment: Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA's), escape packs, atmospheric monitoring devices and fall protection equipment.

You will also be evaluated on the below job elements: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Materials PHYSICAL EFFORT: Uses moderate physical effort to stack, load, unload, move and carry tools, equipment and materials ranging in weight from 10 lbs to 50 lbs unassisted. Occasionally lifts heavier objects with assistance (e.g., using a hand truck). Required to reach, walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally works in cramped quarters, or from ladders, scaffolds or platforms. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.) and usually in a dirty, dusty and/or greasy environment. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shocks, burns, cuts bruises, maimed fingers and scrapes. Occasionally is required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing.
